I have searched and there are a lot of older posts but since this is my first experience with a CF-18 I would appreciate if I could tap into the knowledge of this forum and find a better GPS than the on board GPS that came with my CF-18.

    I have a CF-18DDAZAMM

    Thanks

The older post is still pretty much still up to date. If ripping apart and modding a toughbook is not your thing then check this out , some have bought from him. GPS & bluetooth kit for Panasonic Toughbook CF-18 - eBay (item 220730265348 end time Feb-25-11 03:22:15 PST) and here http://www.custom-toughbooks.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=66&zenid=v2bs81vvgp5pafoomlfs5ju5t3

I do not mind ripping up and modding my toughbook "if" there is an added benefit in doing so. I would like to have optimal GPS performance in the desert.

How does this GPS link you provided match up to other after market GPS performances?

I bought one from the guy in Norway (custom-toughbooks.com). Just takes too long to get a fix with the OEM GPS. It works but I wanted better performance.

Ive seen those eBay GPS kits before and have always wondered how easy they were to install, and how the performance was. Id be interested to hear the review on one if someone picks one up. My old 18 might just get it after all.

Seams like the custom toughbook kit gets mixed reviews.

    ...better options are???

Use a Sirflll type external GPS (cheap way)

DIY,options ,are buy a GPS engine module, antenna, flat connector and bump-out
Often these are from different suppliers , so shipping add's up quick ( expensive way,but you can say that you built it yourself)
Mod the flat connector to provide data and power to the gps, mod a coax cable for the GPS ,and hope for the best lol

PM Teo , and ask him to provide you with the parts to do this

Deal with Vincent , buy just the pcb and flat cable as its the toughest mod and find other parts yourself

The critical point on GPS installation is the antena. even if you have the best of the best engine out there. I always used an active antena. For small form factor antena. I recommend the taoglas stage two patch antena with 25 db gain. It is comparable to Geohelix s-active antena. I expiremented so many antena and the two has the best result so far.
