Okay... I have almost everything on my CF-30 MK1 operating flawlessly under wW7... And I LOVE it. However.. I apparently have encountered what Jordi LaForge might call a "Temporal Causality Loop in the Space Time Continuum"...

I must have accidentally installed the incorrect Protector Suite app for my fingerprint scanner. I found (what I think is) the correct software. so I had to uninstall the old.... Right? Maybe.... It uninstalled everything except two files....

    Homefus2.dll

    infra.dll

It says that these two files are in use and cannot be deleted. So I try manual deletion.... Same thing. So, I think to myself, just go in and rename them as .bak files and reboot.

Now I have an issue where the laptop boots up, shows that "sticky Notes" won't work and will be closed.... Then another box pops up and says I have a severe issue and my laptop will reboot in 1 minute. I have tried renaming them back to dll files but they won't stick... I have tried entering msconfig to alter the startup files and it won't let me.... I can't even get into safe mode....

    Any ideas?

"The best thing about a computer is that it does exactly what you tell it to do. :)
The worst thing about a computer is that it does EXACTLY what you tell it to do!"

Try noting exactly the path to the two files, boot up with a 32-bit "DOS" boot disk, and "rename" the files, such as:

    REN c:\windows\system32\Homefus2.bak Homefus2.dll

Hopefully this will work and will cure your problem, :)

Actually... After I stood on the F8 key... I was able to do a restore and it is all back to normal. I hate doing System Restores because it seems like a cheap way out.....But it did fix the restart issue and renamed the files back to DLLs. But now I still have the same two DLL files stopping me from loading the correct software... I'll need to figure a work-around for that.

Use RegEdit to see if you can locate the two files in Windows Registry.

If you delete their entries Windows should quit looking for them. :radar:

That is what I thought when I renamed the .bak files... but I need to yank it out by the root!

This may sound somewhat naive, but what if you uninstalled the device temporarily? The files will probably remain in use as long as the reader is installed and able to run. If uninstalled, would they no longer have anything to identify with and allow you to delete? Obviously, software is not my strongpoint, just trying to think in a logical manner figuring if you break the connection, they would allow you to delete.

I tried disabling it in the BIOS.... Still no go. I found several mentions of the Protector Suite in Regedit... But they are all clumped together and I figured that I would take my time rather than jumping headlong into it again...

Jesus Christ I hate IE 8

Just whip out your handy Acronis Image of the CF-30 and you are good to go... right? :wideeyed:

As to getting rid of the two files, try File Assassin that is included in the free version of MalWarebytes.

Nope... No Acronis image.... As I haven't gotten it to where I want it yet!

File Assassin worked great... Took those two files out with NO PROBLEM... BU then it went into "Critical Issue" mode again and started the restart sequence every one minute... So another Recovery... and I am back to square one again.

I guess I might as well edit the registry and do it that way... I can't be any worse off... I guess I can always do another recovery.. though I ate doing that. I just don't get why the correct scanner software won't install over the old one.

The issue is that the BIOS sees the fingerprint scanner as part of the boot process. I can't seem to turn it off in the BIOS. When those two files needed are taken away... It starts rebooting every minute... EVEN THOUGH I turn that function off. (To reboot after a problem)

Sorry, my bad! The more times I have been bitten, the sooner I image now. I use an 8GB Flash Drive to make it more painless and faster.

I assume that you are sure that this is not a security feature of the FP Scanner Software?

Rick can you delete the files again and reload windows with out formatting.

Choose Just repair the software when you try loading windows again.

Can you unplug the finger print reader inside to stop it from loading?

Rick, one minor question... are you doing using IE8? Are you insane?

Yeah... I know I should image.... But this was an experiment that turned into something cool. I really like W7 but yeah.... I use IE8 as well as Google Chrome. I tried Mozilla but really don't like it. I don;t really like Chrome either that much. I really like IE7 but don't want to try the uninstallation of 8 and installation of 7.

As far as the fingerprint scanner.... Yeah... I think I will most likely dig in and unplug it and see what's what.

TB2010.... Yeah.... I know about the repair option... I haven't had to use it yet. I like to reformat every 6 months to a year to keep things fresh and to get rid of old crap files.... etc. If I don't get this now I'll get it on the next install. I really never use the fingerprint scanner anyway. They are too buggy and when my wife's fingerprint worked on my laptop.... I KNEW it was crap... Nothing beat a good password!

BTW, if you decide you want to uninstall IE8, you do not have to install IE7. When you do the uninstall, it will revert back to IE7 and all you will really have to install are the updates. I have done this to several TB's recently as I use Chrome almost exclusively. The only problem is that some programs (like the configurator) still do not work with Chrome.
