I really liked using my CF-29 Toughbook for work. I decided to put Norton anti-virus on it and that made it slow as hell. Tried to disable the Norton, next day it won't start up, just flashes a blue screen for 1 second. Won't start in safe mode or anything. This may or may not be related to the Norton......anyhow.
I got it on eBay and now I have no XP discs or anything, even if I did, I would prefer to get the unit back running and recover the files I have on there.
The best as I can catch it has a code 0x0000024
I would even be willing to ship it to someone and pay for your service if I see from your posts that you know what you're doing.![]()

I've had situations like this before on other machines. I ended up getting a cheap HD to usb enclosure to get the data off and then re-installed the OS. They are available for cheap on the bay.
This usually works if the drive itself is not the issue. Also this wont help you get XP back on without an install disk. -
I'd be willing to buy that, cheap enough. I'm probably not tech-savvy enough to do it unless it's really easy.
The computer will not start at all, so does this device pull info from the hard drive without the computer running?
got this on the way. I'll give it a try.
THIS -
If you can get the drive out of the OEM shock housing then you can definitely put the drive in one of these cases. The drive plugs in real easy and on some the cases just snap together.
When plugged into a working machine it shows up in my computer as an additional hard drive (usually you don't even need the included driver disk). From there you just drag and drop the data you want.
-
Cool. Thanks. I'm sure I can get the disc out, I take things apart all the time. Sometimes I can even put them back together!
-
Been there!
BTW welcome to the forum, you've come to the right place! Spend some time reading the official CF-29 thread and the FAQ. In the FAQ you'll find things like TB's great thread about swapping drives.
A wealth of information awaits! -
Thanks. I did go into the sticky at the beginning. I glazed through figuring it was mostly rules like no flaming, no NSFW pics, etc.
For now I'm using a Dell Latitude D820 for the job. It';s nice, fast and all I need but, seems kinda delicate for my work and I'm afraid of dropping it. Also I miss my touch screen in the work van.
Getting a new van in another month and I have a real nice Ledco dock with the lock & key, I really don't want to abandon the Toughbook. I'll buy a new hard drive for it later and get it up & running. -
Just a question here...
-
The FAQ, and official thread, are a great place to get a solid overview of the collective knowledge of our machine. It's quite a bit of reading but you'll learn quite a bit from it, should answer many of the initial questions you'd have about the toughbook.
-
That whole device in the pic is the hard drive, that part in the center (the spindle) is sort of like the bearings that the drive spins on.
You remove the plug and ribbon cable (seen here under the knuckle of the index finger) from the top of the drive and place the whole unit in the enclosure you ordered. -
OK......I guess. See I can repair a 200 ton glycol chiller but, this is all greek to me.
I started reading the sticky, got one good chuckle already
"If it was easy... you'd have a Dell." -
-
I also have a broken CF-28 under the bed, new battery for it. I'll put those up on BST later on. I was showing someone how you can drop it....I had a wifi pcmcia card sticking out of the slot and the computer landed on the card. So it's really only good for parts now.
-
I personally do not use Norton anything....ever. For me, it has always been a memory hog and causes issues. That being said, you may want to try taking out any extra memory that may be installed. The stick may be bad and it just showed up after installing Norton.
Memory is on the bottom. Under the plate with 4 screws.
Others also suggest removing the any devices you have connected, cd or dvd drive, and battery. If the machine boots, then you know one of those devices caused the problem. -
The blue page....what I can read of it in the 1.5 seconds that it's there does say something about memory.
-
OK, so I got the door off....where to go from here?
-
notice the 2 small metal clips, 1 on each side of the memory card. Take your thumbs and gently push them outward about 1/8 of an inch. the card will pop up. You then need to gently pull the card out of the socket.
Don't force anything.
Follow the link in this post. It isn't perfect, but it will help you a lot.

No joy....tried it with CD removed, memory removed.....same blue screen.
BTW how do I get the blue screen to stop long enough to read it while it's displayed? -
you could try taking a photo of it, if you're quick enough.
-
Do you have an original windows cd. ANY version? They are bootable. You could put the cd in and try to boot from it. Don't worry, it won't install anything unless you tell it to.
Odds are the message is so cryptic that it's really useless.
Something like this...
Windows encountered an error at memory address 123456789BitemeMicroshaft0987654321.
We are shutting down the machine to prevent further problems.Translates to UR screwed.
How long does it take to get from the blue Panasonic screen to the BSOD? Try hitting the f8 key multiple times as soon as the Panasonic screen changes to black. -
So how am I supposed to do this stuff it recommends if the windows won't even open? -
I can get to BIOS but I really am afraid to change anything in that.
HA! Googled "acronym BSOD".....takes about 5 seconds.
I think I'll just wait until the HD/usb enclosure arrives so I can save my files from it then get a reboot CD and hopefully the HD on this isn't toast.
Used the computer with no virus protection for over a year, added that damn Norton and it made the thing so slow......I know....it could have been anything that caused it to crash but, I'm blaming Norton. -

STOP 0x00000024, 0X0000024, 0X24, NTFS_FILE_SYS Error Code
Definition: STOP 0x00000024, 0X0000024, 0X24 or NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM
Applies to: Windows XP and other operating systems.
This stop error means that your ntfs file system is corrupt (damage in the file system, bad hard drive data, corrupt SCSI or IDE drivers or a corrupt ntfs.sys file).
Google - geekswhono.com and search for 0X00000024 -
OK, I'm really getting aggravated.....time to take a break from it until the doohickey comes that might allow me to save the files I have on there and might also allow me to save the HD. Thanks for all the replies so far.
-
A few tidbits. For some reason I like the last one. These are not necessarily in order.
Stop 0x00000024 or NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM
The Stop 0x24 message indicates that a problem occurred within Ntfs.sys, the driver file that allows the system to read and write to NTFS file system drives. A similar Stop message, 0x23, exists for the file allocation table (FAT16 or FAT32) file systems.
How to uninstall a hotfix or Service Pack via the Recovery Console?
Repair Ntfs.sys by doing a repair install of Windows XP
If none of the above-mentioned methods worked, you can try to do a repair install of Windows XP, which basically replaces all of the Windows system files. Your applications and settings will remain intact, but you will have to reapply all Windows updates.

Good luck.

Unfortunately, those fixes seem to require a CD with XP on it. I don't recall getting the CD with this computer or at least if I did, I can't find it.

Depending on your proximity to Lombard, IL you might want to get in touch with Rob (JB007RULES). He can certainly help you out, not sure what his rates are

Here ya go. Don't worry about it saying Dell. If you use your XP pro number from the bottom of your unit, this cd will work.

Check out Plop. PlopLinux is a 25 minute download. You have to burn the iso file to disk.
Definitely FWIW.

Anyway.....I downloaded and burned Ploplinux 4.1.0.iso to disk. Total time under an hour. Don't be put off by the linux part. It also manages XP. Good web site. Good instructions. Lots of options. This is like a 70Mib program.

Guess I should check in more often....got one for $20 shipped even though the other auctions ended already.
I got this one
PM'd Rob...thanks for the advice so far.

When you reload windows download and install hdtune
Look in SMART for hard drive errors, if any errors are reported , that might have caused data loss
Besides the touchscreen failures, hard drives go all the time -

OK I got the external HDD thing today. Blizzard here, no work tomorrow so I'll have several beers tonight and tackle this tomorrow when I have nothing to do.
Or I could just sit around in my skid-stains and drink more beer.
OK, I removed the Hard Drive, I have it booted up to my other laptop. It's running. How do I enter my admin password? It won't let me into the files I need to save! -

There's a check-box that allows you to give permission to all sub folders.

Yaay!! Posting this from the CF-29. I got the fles tranferred and while I was at it I deleted the norton. Back Up & Running!
-
Damn, that's a great feeling........almost as much fun as....

I used a little program called Norton utilities back in the DOS days, it was great. Peter Norton sold out to Symantec and as far as I can tell Norton has been junk ever since. If you want a bullet proof security system I recommend Kaspersky IS. It does slow things down a little bit, but nothing gets by without your permission, and it has lots of handy tricks including a sand box where you can open things like a keygen and use it without letting it have access to your hard drive. You can buy licenses on the flea for about $10 per computer per year. I tried Windows Security Essentials the last time I nuke and paved the CF-30 thinking I would add Kaspersky after I was done to speed things up a bit. Never again, something got in, disabled WSE so it wouldn't even open, and messed everything up. Had to do it all over again. I'm never in so much of a rush that I can't wait a second or two for KIS to check a down load or scan the email.

Got a Kaspersky CD on the way. It's 2010 but with free upgrade.
-
I hope you bought it on eBay! Just download a 30 day trial and activate it when you get the number off the CD
