Hey guys, Im new to this site and I took a quick browse through to see if this had already been doccumented but I didnt see anything so I'll throw this out there. I recently picked up two older MK1 CF-28s with the 600 mhz processor and I bought two HDs with caddies to put in and they both have a fresh load of XP pro. When installed however and I try to boot it boots through bios to the winsows loading bar and then stops with a blue screen error that says something along the lines of "Windows boot stop error, winows will not continue to boot to avoid damage to your hardware, if you recently installed new hardware please disregard and restart again" so I tried to boot again, and it does it every time. Well I know the units were pulled out of serivce working with good hard drives so I dont believe the machines are bad, so I thought maybe the drives were bad, but I stuck them in another newer CF-28 800mhz that I had and they boot to XP pro just fine, so does anyone know why my MK1s arent accepting these drives? I need to get these back in service ASAP! would appreciate any help or ideas!

Once again, don't listen to anybody but the Toughbook crowd; that link won't explain or help you do squat. The short answer is that mark 2 (800mhz) and mark 3 (1000 mhz) images are swappable, mark 1 (600 mhz) images are not. You need to reload windows in the older machine.

Im assuming I would need an XP pro bootable disk, I suppose I could take the CD drive out of my MK2 and swap into the MK1 and use such a CD to do it, only problem is I ordered the drives from someone who pre-loaded the xp pro and I dont have a CD lol

You need to do the final install on the mk 1 but you can do a pre-install on any machine. For instance, copy over the I386 folder and run setup from there. Somewhere around the forum is a topic about loading xp up without the setup disc.

If you have any XP Pro disk you should be able to load it. You should have the COA that you need on the bottom of your laptop. If you dont have a CD... Borrow one from somebody.... Your COA is all you need.

Ask anyone you know with a Dell. The Dell XP Pro disks load fine on Toughbooks. You might have to load a driver or two,all available at Modly.org. As TB said, you will need your COA to activate or it will shut down after 30 days.
