That's one, and the more likely, possibility. You can get that effect if you get junk under the edges as well, but that takes either something small & sturdy like a dental pick or pulling off the touchpad & cleaning around the edges (both the pad and the inside of the cabinet. If you're doing that, you might as well just replace it though.

I'm still having mouse issues with my Mk3 as well; it doesn't register properly when I tap and drag, and sometimes it jumps small jumps right over where I stop dragging. I've reinstalled the TouchScreen driver twice to no avail; but I wonder if there's supposed to be a set of MB chipset drivers (for PCI Bus, Northbridge controller, IDE controller, USB, etc) that I'm not using.

*Busts a cap in that jumping mouse's knee* -
mnem...I was thinking the same thing....there is an Intel chipset driver:
intelinf_28_3_d010645
https://eww.pavc.panasonic.co.jp/pc/cgi-bin/itn/toughbook/dl02.cgi?main=1632
But on the Pana site, its specified *Video* chipset...I guess its still worth a try...Its used on the ST/SR, not the S3 (I dont think its used on the 800 or 600 models either.
Have you installed this one TB?
If you end up replacing the mouse-pad, I could use a couple (If they are under $50 ea).
Disscount for multiple units? -
Well... After looking at one of my carcasses left from another build. I can say that taing out the touchpad is possible but in doing so I would probably be left with something that is worse off than I have now. These things are glued in VERY well! The best bet would be to try a new one but we don't have time(or money) for that.
I'm going the driver route. I'm going to reinstall all the drivers for this specific laptop instead of doing what I normally do.... Use the same drivers for all laptops.
I'll post again when I finish. -
Okay... The mouse is still alitle jumpy at times but is much beter than it as. It no longer annoys the !&%* out of me.
I am in the process of making a wallpaper with everyone's name that contributed to the project. I want to make sure I have everything correct. I have the following down as donating to the cause....
Cadillac - Check
Modly - Keyboard
Glen - 1Ghx Case halves
Pappy - Hard Drive
Stiffnecked - Check
Toughbook - Time and ??? (I'm still working on it.)
Linda - Of course!
Is this a correct list? Please forgive me if I have forgotten anyone but chime in if you did and I forgot to mention you. I am making a custom wallpaper with all our names for our young soldier.
Please post asap if I've forgotten anyone -
I just saw another post of a supposed jumpy-mouse fix using folded paper...sliding it under the edges of the pad to clean out the muck...
might be worth a try... -
Try sticking that RAM back in too..... :Þ
-
I saw that post too.. And tried it. And I tried reseating the RAM. It's not near as bad as it was but it still skips around a little. But it's very manageable.... Not near as bad as it was.
I am making the wallpapers now and will continue to play around with it in the meantime... Thanks! -
A quick comment about touchpads in general? An easy way to narrow down problems to drivers vs. hardware, would be to boot to a Linux live CD (Knoppix, Mint, Sidux, etc). Most of these have the touchpads working out of the box, that can help rule out things while troubleshooting.
-
Hey TB,
That was me. I also took some rubbing alcohol and a q-tip and ran around the edges of the touchpad.
That and the folded paper did the trick.
-
Taking out a pad isn't as difficult as it seems. If you have a small flathead (like the 1/8 precision), something thin but with a long shaft, you can work it under the back edge and push it along the edge. Don't worry about getting it glued back in or anything since the lens will hold it.

-
I've got one more day to play with it before sending it out. It's not bad now... Just a slight irritation sometimes.
Grav... Thanks for the offer but it would take too long to get here... Even though you ship lightning fast. -
Well... I am about finished with this. I am doing some final testing on it today and will ship it off either tonight or tomorrow morning.
-
You better take a bunch of pic's of it......
-
Hey TB and Cadilliac,
Thanks for being the "point"! If a Marine is the tip of the sword of American military might; then men like you sure make up the power behind the might.
Pappy -
Well... Here's the final product. Someone asked for pictures to be posted. I almost didn't want to because I wanted to surprise Mike & Linda. But I imagine they will be surprised enough when they get it.
I want to thank everyone who was a part of this. Caddy... It was your idea. It was a very generous thought. I'm glad we could make it happen.
Glen... Thanks for the case halves... Your gift allowed him to have a Toughbook that is over twice as fast as what they originally had. Modly... Thanks for the keyboard. He won't have to worry about sand now! Pappy... Thanks for the hard drive. He has enough space to hold the 15,000 songs I put on for him and have room to spare! Stiffnecked... Thanks for the check! You allowed him to have wifi! I need to also thank www.newegg.com. They offered us a $15 discount on any purchase. Since the only thing that came from them so far was the 100GB hard drive that Pappy bought... I haven't had a chance to use it yet. I'll take them up on their offer when I order more parts to take the place of the ones I used.
Mike also got bluetooth, a DVD R/W and 512MB RAM. Caddy and I will split those. I donated the touchscreen and my time. I've got the carcass of the 600 left over though it is pretty much picked bare.
Thanks to the others that made offers and cheered us on. It was much appreciated. This was a very fun project. I'm sure Mike will get many years of service out of this. He won't have a problem using the Internet now.. Now matter where he is! His friends will be jealous that's for sure.
Anyway... Thanks again to everyone! -
Looks GREAT! Good work everybody, especially Toughbook and Cadillac!
-
Can I just say, AWESOME DUDE!

Definitely a great job Rick.. Something to be very proud of!

Yesterday, I received the awesome ultimate toughbook built for my son, PFC Mike, and I wish there were words stronger than THANK YOU to express appreciation and gratitude! I saw the picture Rick posted and agree that he did an outstanding job ( way over and above the call of duty!). Mike has next weekend off and I was going to give it to him then, but I'm too excited to wait so will Fedex it to Ft. Knox tomorrow.
THANK YOU for giving so much of yourselves in this wonderful gift to him, and letting him know that wherever the Marines may send him, he won't be alone! -
Linda,
I, for one, was glad to help. I'm sure all the others feel the same way. It's nice to know that a little piece of us will be going with him, wherever he goes. Please tell him if he ever needs any help with it to come see us here... We'll take good care of him.
Rick
