I am getting a buzzing sound out of my cf-29 when the power is off. Very high pitched kind of whine. Its faint but I can hear it if I try. When I turn the power on this sound gets much louder and seems to change pitch. Any ideas what would cause this and what to do to fix it? It seams to change pitch when I plug in the power cord and is slightly louder and does not go away if I pull out the battery plugged in but of course goes away when I pull the batttery and its not plugged in.

Someone is going to ask the full model #. So why not I. :)

Mainly to see what if any goodies are installed. GPS? Bluetooth? things that might stay on when it's off. Mods to the original configuration?

I was going to suspect the battery, but it sounds like (no pun intended) it buzzes when you boot with no battery at all. Is this correct?

Have you tried it with the speaker unplugged?

Jeff...from the tip of the iceberg

Didn't someone have a similar problem a month or so ago?

For some reason I seem to remember having to reset the BIOS to defaults.
Although I suffer CRS so your mileage may vary.

You missed the part where he says it buzzes while off. :)

HFHL is better. One ride is a CH-53 freight helicopter caused that. And assorted gun-fire.

Thanks deere I forgot the still there part plugged in.

Is there a bee in there? Cracked solder joint in AC power area?

    Weird.

Does it go away if you plug headphones into their jack? (which should disconnect the speaker and thereby simplify things a bit).

    Model cf-29ewkgzkm

It is more of a high pitch whine than a buzz actually. And its not coming from the speakers, I can hear it real loud when I open the drive bay and put my ear to it. I'm guessing it might be power supply or regulation based (on the main board) but I'm not sure.

    Thanks,
    Adam

What happens when to the noise when you plug an external monitor into that port on the computer?

Mnem or Teo would probably know better, but it sounds as if it might be a capacitor going bad. Only thing I know of that retains some kind of power with no battery/no ac power to it.

    Admittedly, I am no electrician..

I'm with Doobi, with battery and ac power removed, you are pretty much limited to a capacitor discharging itself as there is no other juice present.

Try pulling hdd, optical drive, and ram. Do you still get the noise?
Try turning off the LCD via hotkeys or do it thru power settings in XP.
This should eliminate the power going to the inverter

Remember sound travels. It is very difficult to pinpoint a noise from inside a device.
