my cd rom drive for my toughbook died today, i knew it was caus the drive started sticking real bad
, and within the last few months its gone really bad, today the manager has gone on holiday so bought the toughbook to work and was going to put winxp in but the drive wouldnt open
so after a while i got a knife out and afew minutes late the holder where the cd sits cracked, but at least i manage to open it......
i tried my sony dvd drive but that wont work on the toughbook even though both are pcmcia drives,
i always thought it would work on the toughbook but doesnt......
anyone know where i could buy a cd drive or have a spare one for the toughbook, doesnt matter if its usb, pcmcia or the atual drive long as the price is right and it works with the cf-28 i'll take it.....![]()

You could get an OEM optical drive for your toughbook, but my guess is that it will be far more expensive that getting a cheap USB cd drive. -
am abit weary about usb drives have read not everyone works with a toughbook, any chance you know which one will be suitable....
-
Don't fret! Toughbook solved this problem:

mine is the external drive, not the internal one....
-
You could try to buy a new drive and replace it. (The internals)
My .02 is that you should buy one of the cheap internal drives that houses just a CD ROM and convert it like I did to a DVD R/W... It's easier than you think. For $150 USD (or less) you'll have a drive worth $300 USD.
I don't know if the BIOS reads the USB while booting so I'd stay away from that type. An external CD/DVD defeats the purpose of portability in my opinion.
Get an internal one! -

lol.........
going to search ebay now see if i find one..... -
anyone know whats the going price for a dvd/cd drive??????
-
You should be able to pick up a CD drive for under $100 USD (or equivalent) or right around there. You can then buy a slimline DVD replacement ($50 USD on newegg.com) and then you'd have a setup that they are charging $350 USD on ebay. I've even thought about buying a few, swapping and then selling them. Seems like it would be easy money...
