I have a cf 18 -mk5 - and have just discovered a sim card slot under the cover where the mic and headphone sockets are.
Yes, i tried a sim there! did not work!
Am i mistaken here, is it a different type of storage card slot?
I looked through the manual and there is no reference to it.
There was me thinking i had a built in 3G net unit!!

I believe that all systems have the sim card slot but unless you have the WWAN card and antennas, it is kinda useless.

I have a MK5 CF-18 with wwan and the sim card slot is still blocked off. It still has the factory wings and I have had the back cover off and the card is still there. Maybe the sim card slot was for only carriers that had the sim card?

I was told that for the 30 series it is for AT&T service. I put my Verizon SIM card in mine just last week for the 1st time to see if it did anything and nadda.

I think it really depends on how your WWAN card is set up. In other words, what service it is set for. If it was set up for AT&T or T-Mobile, the sim card slot would be used. If set for Sprint, the slot would not be used.

Also, you need to put in an AT&T sim card if the WWAN is set for AT&T and so on.

The GPRS ver. with the SB555 does not have the sim slot.
The CDMA, EDGE and HSDPA ver. Have the sim slot.

I did a little looking up for mine and found the offical driver download for it. Mine is a sierra wireless EM5625 modem. So it is linked with Verizion. That would be why it doesn't have a SIM card. I may see if the dang thing still gets any signal.

Driver still listed on Verizon's site.

Link on the release of it when it was new.

What about the one's that have the GOBI card in which you can choose your carrier? My 30 MK3 has the GOBI in which I use Verizon, but what if I wanted to use AT&T? I would assume you would have to use it since they do require a SIM. I will look thru the CSA instructions and see what it says about AT&T. My MK2 that has the embedded Verizon does not have the SIM slot.

Don't you have the little flapper door above the battery door? That would be where the SIM card goes. You do need a SIM for AT&T with the Gobi card.

My MK3 has a SIM slot, MK2 does not. I am assuming that they don't put the SIM slot since it has the Verizon card.

My point with the GOBI is that if I wanted to use AT&T there is no information, drivers or anything to support that change.

The CSA will handle everything. You just supply the SIM card for AT&T. If the CSA is installed to the HDD just go to Start> Programs> Panasonic> Carrier Selection Application> Carrier Selection Application and select which carrier you want to use, AT&T, Sprint or Verizon. If the CSA is not installed to the HDD you need the CSA disc to install the carrier you want to use.

I suppose with ever better technology that the ports/slots in the older machines get left behind.
I can now use my HTC phone ,go 3G /go hotspot and my toughbook will pick it up on it`s wifi output, and my CF 18 is online anywhere!
    Where there`s a will there`s a way eh?

I do have the CSA on my SSD, I will get a SIM from a friend of mine and try it. Although I would never leave Verizon, nor would the arm of my employeer.

Hey, when I ordered my GOBI 2000 for my CF-19, isnside the package was a SIM card for AT&T. I use verizon, but I kept the SIM card so that if I went overseas with my 19, I could get on AT&T using my GOBI and provided SIM. Don't throw it away because it has the EIN that goes with the GOBI in your computer.

That is good to hear! With that being said; we should have gotten a SIM card when I got the30 MK3 with a GOBI card?

No, you get the SIM card from AT&T when you open an account.

That is for headset. The old WWAN has a data and voice and I just wonder why they abondoned it while it is very usefull for todays demand. Its like you you have a pc and cellphone in 1. Just like the ipad.

Do any of the older cards that have that still work on the networks? It would be worth looking into. Both of the CF-18's I have with WWAN don't have that or the sim slot.

The only units I have seen with the headset socket were the Aussie TelCon ones. I'm not sure the voice/data modems were ever available to the general public.

Yes, if it was a "new" in the box item, you should have.

That is not correct with a brand new GOBI. I received mine and the GOBI 2000 allows you to choose which one you want, Sprint, AT&T, or Verizon. I was on MiFi with Verizon and wanted to get rid of extra hardware. When I recieved my new GOBI, it came with the AT&T SIM card on a larger card you punch it out of. You can elect any of the services once you install GOBI and CSA. Verizon was a little difficult cause they had to transfer my existing number over and I had to provide the EIN and serial # of the GOBI. AT&T does it online and you can choose different plans utilizing the SIM they provide. AT&T provides a little better worldwide coverage than the others, but I have not had to use AT&T just yet.
