    I was just given a CF-27RJ MK1.

It has no HDD or RAM. (reason for it being free)

I have done a quick search on the net and found a HDD for it and some RAM also.

My first question is can the CPU be ugraded with a newer model Toughbook?

Second, can other parts from different model toughbooks fit/work in mine?

Thanks for any help in advance.

No... You cannot upgrade the CPU.... It is soldered. Yes... Some items are transferable to CF-28 models and even CF-29. The CD/DVD Caddy is shared between all three models. You should read some of the stickies and brush up as you will find a lot of useful data/info there.

Keyboards from CF-28/27 are same to some degree... The standard keyboard anyway. The emissive keyboards are NOT transferable.

There are several CF-27 users on the site that will chme in I am sure. Read the stickies and it will usually lead to more questions.... That's life... That's what makes it all interesting... That's what makes you buy more Toughbooks! ;)

Depending on the amount of on board ram that you have (The first screen in the bios will give you information on your processor, processor speed, and amount of on board ram. With a Mk-1 I think you are limited to 128mb of additional ram, you might get lucky and be able to get a 256mb Kingston model to work but I am not sure as I have had no experience with the Mk-1. Software either windows 98se of a minimalist version of linux. I am sure others with more experience with this model will weigh in with their knowledge.

    Welcome to the madness!!!

For an OS I would recommend WIN2K, it should run alright on that machine. Are you in need of a hard drive caddy? You'll need one if the hard drive you got doesn't come with one.

I did look at some of the stickies but it looked like most were geared towards the CF 28/29 etc.
I'll have to read all the way through to see what I can find out.
I do have a caddy for the CD drive that is in it. Thanks.

The processor speed is 266 and then it says 640 ram.(I think, LOL)
I was looking at having it run WIN98 when I finally get the HDD and RAM put in.

Yea, no hard drive caddy. I open up the bottom and it's just a empty space there. LOL

Thanks for all the info guys. Looks like I may have to start hunting down a more updated Toughbook. Were I worked at back in Ohio we used the CF-28 and I loved it. I just didn't know what the difference was between models.
Would like to find one like the ones I worked on. Love the touch screen and emissive keyboard.

I've got a caddy you can have for shipping if you decide to get it going.
