I am new to this so please bare with me. I own a CF 28 that I have upgraded to Windows XP Pro. I have loaded SP I II III already, but have none of the usual updates as I have not configured internet on it yet. I have tried to use my Canon N1220U flatbed scanner with my 28. I have loaded all the necessary software and drivers, but when I try to activate the scanner I get an error message saying the scanner is not communicating with the computer. I have re- installed the software several times with no luck. At one point it gave me a "16bit" error message of some kind. In my aggrivation I did not pay attention to the last error message. The scanner does work with my Asus Ebook, which also runs Windows XP Pro. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

did you check the cable? I have that exact same scanner running on a cf-28 MK1 600 mhz, running winxp with sp3. so theoretically it should work on yours.

Does the scanner use USB or printer port? If printer port, check the BIOS to make sure it is configured to be bi-directional / EPP, or ECP per scanner instructions. If it's USB, try reading a USB stick to make sure it's working -- heavy current draw like scanners can blow an internal fuse on the USB port.

Thanks for the quick reply. The scanner uses a USB cable. I have checked the USB port with a thumb drive and appears to be functioning. As far as checking the BIOS, you lost me at check......

If I remember correctly, you must install all software and drivers BEFORE actually connecting the USB to the printer. If you have it all hooked up while installing, it blows chunks and doesnt want to work. I would try uninstalling everything, leave it disconnected, then reinstall everything. At some point, it should ask you to actually plug it in to the USB port.

    Your mileage may vary...

Thanks guys, I got it to work.
Next question... I have heard about the USB wifi adaptors, not cards, but a USB plug in similar to a thumb drive. Anyone use one of these? and would it work with a 28? If so, what software or settings would I have to install? Thanks again for the help.

I've used several different USB wiFi adapters on both my CF-28s; they all worked fine. Just be sure that if you use the Wireless Client from the adapter MFR, that you have Windows Wireless Connection Manager disabled in the Network Connection Properties dialog. The USB port on a CF-28 isn't very user friendly for these; try finding an 18" USB extension cable so you can Velcro it to the back of your LCD.
