I had always wanted a Toughbook and late last year i got my first one. Of course i was un-educated on them (until i found this place) and bought one that didn't have a battery, ac adapter or caddy. It was also missing the bottom cover. On the plus side it still had the windows sticker for dual boot for windows xp and 2000, 13.3 screen, 512 of ram (extra 256 stick) so i was happy. At first i got a cheap overseas ac charger to test it out. I couldn't get it to work. I then got a used Panasonic adapter and it would work sometimes. On closer inspection the middle round part of the ac adapter port was broke off. It got shelved for awhile. I picked up two mk3 cf-28's and got them back going with a SHORTY IDE to compact flash adapter. Now one has 4 gb and the other has 8gb compact flash (30mbs ultra 2 scandisk) and are used by my 4 and 5 year old boys to learn computers and play games. So i decided it was time to do something with the first one i got. After playing around on eBay i got another caddy, adapter, compact flash(4gb) to drop off in it. The power adapters will work but you had to hold your hand on it to make it make contact with the two prongs on that go under the broke off part. After pulling part of the motherboard out of the case i seen it had to be soldered into place. At first i almost parted it out, them i decided to spend 10 more bucks on it before giving up on it. On careful study i seen where the plastic could be removed with out messing with the metal that is soldered into the motherboard. I decided to take pictures of it after i had already started so the broke part where the middle was broken can't really be seen. I have been using the Toughbook now for over a week with no problems. Below is how i did it.
Part i started with from ebay

I ALIGNED UP THE TABS AND STARTED SHOVING IT ON BY HAND.
ABOUT HALF WAY ON I HAD TO USE MY PLIERS VERY SLOWLY TO PUSH IT ON
IT HAS TWO BUMPS ON THE BOTTOM THAT LOCK INTO PLACE SO THE LAST 1/4 OF THE WAY YOU MAY HAVE TO PRY UP ON THE FT OF IT JUST A HAIR WHILE PUSHING IT ON WITH THE PLIERS.

I am happy with the results. 10 more dollars and taking my slow, slow time doing this saved me from having to scrap out this Toughbook.
