This is how I used a floppy drive caddy from a CF 27, 28 or 29 and modified it to carry a DVD drive(It is non removable in my design).
I used a standard JAE 50 IDE to USB adapter board. I ran the power wires directly to the floppy interface. I did this due to
the power requirements and so it would turn off when the laptop was off.
I ran the 2 USB data wires separately. There are 4 or 5 unused terminals on the media bay port, so you could wire the
USB data cables through them and make this removable. My initial plan was to run it to cn49 but it was covered after I
assembled the CF29. I moved on to cn52. It did not find the drive. I imagine the usb on cn52 needs turned on somehow.
Another possibility is wiring it to the USB on the docking port.
I am busy and my test unit is actually sold with an original DVD caddy so I just wired a USB cord to the USB data (Power is still from the floppy interface)
terminals and plugged it into the side to see if my mod worked. It does and win XP found the drive. This unit is a MK2 so
boot from USB is not an option. I imagine if you used a unit with that option on the bios that it would boot.
I put the bulk of the pix into 2 pdf files to make it easy to upload and download. I had to use 2 files due to the file size restriction on the forum.

The USB to CD adapter was $8 from China.
The breakout board(if you need one)was $7.Many have posted ways to hook up internal USB without using one. I wanted to have one to test things.
FFC cable was from scrap laptop.
DVD was from scrap laptop.
Kapton and metal tape was stock on hand.
$20. If you need the floppy, breakout and adapter
$15. if you have a floppy and buy a breakout board.and adapter

@deere245 + Rep for persistence
mnem...Like the song....Too much time on my hands -
LOL.. Persistent or too stubborn/dumb to give up. I have been called both before.
I do happen to have a lot more time than money. But, persistence keeps me away from the 1001 really stupid things I used to do with my time and money.
Dead or jail, I have been way too close to both in a previous life.
Happily leading a boring life. -

How drunk WERE you when you did THAT?
I've actually considered the benefits of adding a USB port to my MP bay; all sorts of trouble one could get into widdat... 'Scope module, OBD II module, Transwarp Coil Alignment module... you name it.
It's been on my to do list for a while, but you DO-ED IT!
REP to YOU!!!

Wonder if I could fit a WayBack Machine module in there... -
Weld it to stay...
Paint it to match... -
I used to work at a factory where they built bus conversions and School buses called Coach & Equipment; we would hide a multitude of sins with colored caulk. It was a standing joke there; C-n-E stood for Caulk-n-EVERYTHING...

Which reminds me of the time.......
Air Force Base in Okinawa, laid off locals so they demonstrated and the base needed additional riot control troops......which meant us. 3rd Bn 4th Marines. We had recently returned from Vietnam and our helmets and flak jackets were veterans along with those who wore them. Not only that we had been training for riot control for several weeks.
Picture a line of Marines at parade rest lining both sides of the street (entrance).
When the demonstrators started across the highway at some signal we were ordered to close the gate. IOW the two echelons became the gate. M-16s (no bayonets) on hips and directed toward the marchers.
Just before the crowd reached us this is the funny part, a little car with a news camera came barreling between the lines of demos and Marines fully intending to film these mean, bada$$ ruffians.
Just as he reached us a 1st Lt. standing on a jeep yelled,

i have some extra floppies, i think its worth it for me to try.
way to save some money, since these floppies are so cheap and the dvd caddy is around $80.
looked at the pdf, looks is definitely an issue. but i am sure with time and members working together we can get it to a stockish look.
