so I have read and re-read and I'm feeling confident/foolish enough to have a go.
But I'm still a little confused about the voltage regulator. If the doner dongle takes 5v from the outside usb why can't it take 5v from the internal one?
i'm sure I am being a bit simplistic so please put my troubled mind at rest.
Ps.does anyone know if the usb in the docking station is on cn52? and if so is there a possibility of using the connection to the port replicator socket?
Way too much thinking aloud I suspect

You need to use a voltage regulator like the darlington circuit in order to control or switch it off/on via software to save battrey when bluetooth is not in use. But if you are not concern of having it of to control via software you may use a USB bluetooth dongle and use a manual switch like the togle or sesaw switch. There is already a 5 volts on the connector and no need to look around and you already mentioned that.
This is also to give info specially those who have a cheap PCMCIA bluetooth couple with USB 2.0 from china that if those bluetooth hardware has no control software included, you will notice that it drain your battery faster than normal.

OK I think I get it - the switch connector is there on cn52 but I have to add the switch before the bluetooth dongle.
This learning curve is steepening -
First and foremost you must have basic priciple on electronics circuitry. There is a provision on CF-29 to add a usb bluetooth on the mbo. under the keyboard slot. I don't remember the CN no. I don't have the circuit diag.. right now as I am using the laptop and those collection of diagram are stored on my desktop.
You must connect the manual switch either togle or sesaw switch series to the power supply line I think it is VA5 or VC5.There is a good space under the second slot of PCMCIA to place the tiny switch when you have MK1-MK3. This was done before by me two years ago but finding a right switch is tough.
Here is the basic diagram for your reference.

I think my confusion came about because you had asked about the need for a voltage inverter and that set me thinking in the wrong direction. I now see (I think) that the 3.3v is needed for the switch.
Thanks for your efforts and patience - I have to start somewhere and it is all starting to make sense, slowly
