A problem with my new cf-29. When I connect to the internet with the wireless connection, it shows that I am connected but internet explorer and firefox cannot connect to the internet using my homes netgear router. I took my toughbook to Caribou and their free wifi and it will connect...something is preventing me from connecting I think...any ideas? I can connect through a cable and the wireless does work for other computers in my house. It has a Intel PRO/wireless 2915ABG network card...any ideas would be appreciated Thanks

Do you have WPA enabled on your home Wi-Fi Router? Are you exchanging the key?

Yes, the icon on the lower part of the scren shows that I am connected to the wireless network, but when I go to IE or firefox it says it can't find the server. I have tried unplugging and replugging both the cable modem and the wireless router also. Also I tried turning off the security on the router and no luck.

Is your router set to Mac Address Filtering? Do you have Parental Controls set that prevents Internet access? Those would be the top two that come to mind.. Ask me how I know!!?? :)

Also... If your router is a BG router,,, make sure it is set for "mixed" signals... I had a customer who swore his laptop would never connect... Until he made the change. He router was set to B and his card to G....Or something like that.... Look through your router setups.

Sometimes it is easier to hit the reset button on the back and redo the whole shebang rather than trying to trace out the issue.

    Just a thought...

I have 3 other laptops running off my wifi (my kids) without a problem. I can connect to other wifi at Caribou and I tried at the high school tonight and was able to connect without a problem. Maybe my 29 just doesn't like netgear...I have 2 netgear routers and have tried them both without luck...

I think what you should do is erase your connection history in the control panel and Network area. Once you erase it, then reconnect to the router like its your computers first time. That may be something to try out.

tools-internet options-clear history. I'd clear everything including cookies and then I'd do a disk cleanup. After I'd probably have a bowl of chunky monkey ice cream.

Another thing to look for is if your laptop is connecting to YOUR WiFi. I've had this problem on many service calls; the laptop was actually trying to connect to a neighbor's WiFi, and of course, the EU didn't have the correct authentication. Some WiFi clients will automatically try to connect to a stronger signal even if it's NOT your default profile; Windoze Wireless Zero will do that to you too.

Go through your WiFi client's Profile list, delete them all, and start over from scratch. Also, make sure your WiFi adapter's TCP/IP Properties are set to DHCP, not some privately assigned IP address.

And, when you're all done, don't forget to "sacrifice" a shot of Jack Daniels to the Gods of WiFi - it can't hurt.

I prefer to sacrifice my Jack orally, but hey - whatever works for you.

    I like mnementh's,Toughbooks,and Red_Dragon suggestion's the best

My thinking is you need to start off from scratch
Erase all router settings ,usualy done with a recessed button on the back of the router
Access router through wired network cable
Rename your ssid and add a password
Make sure you wi-fi drivers are up to date on the laptop
Then erase all wireless history, so that you will have to re-enter password and select it to autoconnect

I did reset the router, set new name and password, 3 computers can connect up to it, but alas, the cf-29 doesn't work. The icon in the tray says that I m connected, 54 Mbps, but when I go to firefox or IE, unable to connect. As an aside, I did connect up to the internet several times at work in various places without a problem. I am stumped!

I get that behavior when I've assigned the Toughbook wifi card's TCP/IP to a fixed address, instead of letting the router's DHCP assign it. Suggest checking TCP/IP properties for that setting.

Got to Start>All Programs>Accessories>Communication>Network Connections and then right click on your wifi adapter and go to Properties; then click on the 'wireless networks' tab on top. If you have any locations listed in the box near the bottom, delete them. That is how you delete the wifi cache to start over.

I would also suggest checking the tick box on that same page to 'allow windows to manage my wifi device' and see if that gets you anywhere. Another question, do you have a home network setup? If so, can you see and browse the other 3 laptops on your home network from your 29, or will that not connect either? Lastly, do you have any parental controls or mac filtering setup on your wifi router?

I deleted all of the networks, and the box was checked, restarted the computer and it connected to the network right away. But still cannot access the internet. All of the other computers can go online with the wireless network. The 29 is the only one that won't access the net, and no parental filters on the router.

Restore your CF-29 network setting to a default value also your IE, firefox or whatever explorer you have and start right there. If necessary start from scratch, reload the os. There is something wrong with your setting that might not be right.

It still sounds like a mac filter on the router problem to me. You are connecting and getting to the wifi router just fine, but cannot gain access outside. That is a permission issue on the router itself. Can you browse the other computers on the network through the wifi router (meaning can you see, open, and manipulate files on the other PC's)?

Yes, I can access the internet on other computers using this same router. How would I check those settings on my router?
    Thanks

No, that is not what I was asking. What I want to know is if you can browse the other computers on your home network from the 29 and if you can manipulate files on those computers. ie: From the 29, can you go to "my network connections" and see laptop 1, 2, and 3; and if so, can you copy and paste any files from those computers to your 29?

If that all works fine, then your network is set up correctly and you definitely just have a problem with the 29 getting out to the internet. If the 29 can't even see or manipulate the other computers in the network, then the problem is the 29 itself and its setup.

delete your wifi card drivers from the Device Manager and reboot your computer and let Windows reinstall it. If that does not work, then go to the manufacturers website and make sure you have the latest drivers for your wifi card. If both of those check out, then report back to us.

If that does not work then, we will need more extensive help from JB007 or Mnem..

EDIT: Just a thought too, can you take screen shots of your Wireless Property settings so we can verify; and a screen shot of your "ipconfig /all" from the DOS screeen.

OK, well we reinstalled the OS, hooked up to the net gear router, and it connects, but still no internet. I can connect to any number of other wifi networks without a problem. I am still trying to do the above tasks and will post them when I get those to work. Thanks for all the help...I do appreciate it!

Is there any chance your browsers are configured for gateway addresses or IPs that are out of the Netgear's range?

One of my Atheros card throws an entirely different IP and take much longer than others to authenticate/connect to my Engenius router.

What about the settings in your Netgear... any IP/MAC filtering, WEP, WPA, etc

Well I finally bought a new wireless Atheros card and guess what? It connected with my home router!! I will take it with me to work today and see how well it works picking up weaker wifi signals, I have read that this card is better at that than the intel card. Thanks for all of the help!
