Laptops generally have a slider or button to toggle wifi, or you could go into network and connections and just disable your wireless that way.

yes I know about this about laptops and computers generally.

hopefully somebody here HAS the laptop I mentioned in the subject, or a manual on it, and can answer.

I have had two of them and sold them both a few months back. I don't remember them having any switch to turn the wireless off. The only two switches I remember are the one to open the lid and to open the dvd drive. I just left the wireless on so I never considered it. You will have to go into network settings or if you are using the intel utility (if you have a intel card) turn it off like that.

(if you ever get a chance to get your hands on the w5 duo model snag it, it's why I got rid of my W2's)

You can go there to get your basic owners manual.

EDIT: Also I had to look up a picture to see if the wireless could be turned off by FN key but it didn't look like it could. You maybe able to remap a key to do that though.

I found this with a Google search, in the text it states you turn off by using a taskbar icon or as mentioned earlier in the networks area of control panel, I hope that helps?

There are two ways to disable the wireless lan.

    1. The wilreless utility should be on your tray as a greem lightening flash symbol.

    2. In the BIOS setup - F2 as you power up - has an option on the advanced tray.

    Good luck,
    Dave

thanks, is point 1 the intel proset software? if not do you have a link to the utility?

I'll try that and report back, though perhaps not immediately 'cos I have to save 59 notepad windows first.

No, this is a Panasonic, not an Intel, utility. My experience with the Intel proset wireless has been just short of disastrous. I don' t claim to be a networking expert, but when my TB's had the old Intel utility, the one that let another utility manage the wireless, it was OK. Now, Intel assumes that it is either the Intel or the MS utility running wireless. My employer requires using Funk Odyssey, which worked perfectly until this new version of the Intel utility got in there.
My W8 w/ Vista came with the fancy Intel utility, and its networking stinks, as well. someplace on the MS web site there is survey of problem areas with vista (and W7 I think). Wireless is a huge problem base on those reports. But, I could be completely wrong on the cause; this is just my sense of it.

    Sorry for the rant.
