Has anyone actually swapped in a bigger 1.8" hard drive, I've got a 5 gig and want to bump it up. Looks like certain ipods are good donors. The oem drive in mine is a Toshiba mk5002mal.

Tim,
Nothing to it as long as you have the dock. You will need a set of "tamper proof" torx keys. I got mine from the wiha guy on eBay where I get my Toughbook screw drivers. I haven't looked lately but there are usually Hitachi drives in 20 & 30gb sizes on eBay.

Of course it sounds like you already have it open. I was initially confused by all this ZIF talk until I figured out what that was all about. I saved the best for last, I have a set of restore disks for XP PRO SP1. You'll have to buy a copy of XP for your COA, but we can deal with the rest. PM or email me.

I'll reply for the benefit of all although I think "all" may be just you and I. I really like the CF07- sweet unit to go under the seat. My oem drive didn't have torx, regular old screws, my drive was not a ziff connector it is a 50 pin female. You probably know more than I; the ziff is a 40 pin male?

Tim,
ZIF as I found out after a lot of looking just means zero insertion force, it has nothing to do with the pin number or arrangement of the socket. I did mention that ZIF had me scratching my head for a while. Its just 1.8" ata.

I have to do some more research, the ipod weenies say you can't use the zif drives to replace the older non-zif drives. Of course the reason may have nothing to do with the drives zif connector, may be a ipod software thing. Hmmm

Tim,
Ipod? What is ipod? We don't need no stinking ipod! Seriously though, just google the model # on your old drive, get the specs, and find a bigger drive. I'll crack one of my older ones and see if it is the same connector as the one I've been using.

I opened up a 5gb Win98 07 and found a Toshiba MK2004GAL 5gb drive. A little Google turned this up first.

Like I said, we don't need no ipod weenies. ATA100. My little comment about trying to figure out what the ZIF interface was came from a lot of looking around until I found out it was techno weenies showing off. The drives are made in two connector styles, ZIF-CE and ATA100, we want the latter. Now go buy one of them Hitachi drives and lets get going!

HI,
I've been playing about with a drive upgrade from a conventional (pin plug) 1.8" drive to a Toshiba ZIF connector style.
The little adapter boards are relatively easy to get on ebay, the hard part is finding enough room for the adapter - it's about 1/4" thick and 1" long.
Ebay item 380099359360 is typical, the pin socket fits to the original hard drive connector and a short flex ribbon cable links it to the new drive.
Both Toshiba and Hitachi make the new style drives (ZIF or LIF), however the pin 1 side is reversed - the Hitachi needs to go upside down compared to the Toshiba. They also specify different cable thicknesses for some reason.
(Check the ads, some supply both cables, others one or none).
Electrically, it just plugs in and works. Whether you can get the bits in the machine is up to you to decide - they do not fit in a relative's Sony T1MP I was supposed to be upgrading...
If there is no spare space, the normal pin connector drives are available up to about 60GB if you hunt around.
Edit: 80GB 1.8" IDE drives are being sold on ebay, though rather expensive.
Hope this is of use,
Robert.
