Make sure you connected the harddrive connector to the harddrive that was supposed to be. If you could provide us here a picture of how you connected the harddrive and how you placed it into the caddy will be a big help if there are something wrong with it.

I am pretty sure there was something wrong how you connected. Your harddrive must be IDE type but I know you know that. Is it brand new drive or a used one? Let us know. Check also on the bios if it is there, If yes! just continue a fresh copy of Xp if it is xp and follow instruction. it will format the drive before the file will be copied.

If you load an o/s like xp using ntfs you will be OK
    Windows will see about 112gb
If you load an o/s with fat32 ,you won't see the full drive size for sure
Give us some details on what you are up to

The bios has to see it

Make sure the connection is correct
The last four pins in a group are not connected
See if its installed upside down or moved over one set of pins so that two pins are not connected
Its easy to miss the pins by one pair ,I have done that myself

If you can find a Samsung HM160HC
Its a great drive , I install it in some Toughbooks as a upgrade drive
Its a large 160gb , and even if the bios only reads 137 gb I partition it in two when installing windows
