used ubuntu 11.04 for a while in cf-18 mk1, and im guite happy with it. Its not linux mint so you have to install drivers yourself, but after that its most reliable and fastest distro out there.Boot and surf takes about 1 minute,and touchscreen works out of the box.. I have been little surprised when noticed that folks here trying to install win 7 to mk1:s...why?
Meaby everybody should remember that this little "turtle" has 900hz prosessor..
And NO im not trying to start any "distrowar" , just saying that you have very good option there if needed...and its free!

Agreed, i also installed this distro and it is working great! It took me a while to get linux working on my cf-18 MK1 and i went through a few versions of ubuntu but this version is very stable and everyting works..
I even got the onboard keyboard to work and come up when i need to logon or unlock the screen which is great.
Next, i would like to get the front buttons to work as well as screen rotation to work properly...
Have you made use of the OnBoard keyboard? -
No i dont have that onboard keyboard, i havent realised that its possible. How did you do that? ..and what distro have you got running?
-
Do either of you have the scroll feature enabled on the touchpad?
Jeff -
I did get it to work using the OnBoard keyboard.
You can open a terminal and type Onboard, the keyboard will popup. I created a shotcut on my desktop so i can launch it quicker.
I even got the keyboard to popup automatically when i need to unlock the screen or logon.
Now, im trying to find a way to get the front facing button to pop up the keyboard when i press it.
Anyone get that working?
Jeff, I coul'nt get mine working... I was actually going to make the scroll bars wider to make it easier to scroll with the touch screen but i havent had time to tackle that yet...

here is more details to get to onboard (i just got home and thought i should elaborate):
Go to System, Preferences, Main Menu
On the left side, select Universal Access
on the right, check OnBoard
To have it display when logging on, launch Onboard and go to settings
Under Desktop Integration, select Show Onboard when Unlocking the screen
To Create Launcher:
Right Click 0n desktop, select create Launcher
Call it OnBoard
In the command, type onboard
The Icon will even change to the onboard icon.
Hope this helps

One bad thing: i dont know is it ubuntu problem but...youtube videos arent run smoothly, and attleast xvid compressed videos freezes hole system,prosessor runs 100 pros all the time.
I dont have xp anymore so cant tell is`t just because off slow prosessor..? -
Good point, i also am having some problems with Flash videos. youtube seems ok (Just on the verge of being slow) but everything else is choppy...
I didnt have any problems with Xvid or DIVX videos; mine seem to run fine...
I would assume this has to do with the intel 915 chipset which is barely working under this linux version. I would love to be able to fix this problem with the video...
How much RAM do you have in yours? Mine has 1.2Gig.
I would think more ram and perhaps a faster HDD might solve this problem.

Just took some time and fixed a few more problems... thought i would share:
1- remove those Overlay scroll Bars:
I hated those overlay scroll bars; they made it nearly impossible to scroll using the touch screen.
Open terminal, type in "sudo su" and enter your root password
Type in this: echo "export LIBOVERLAY_SCROLLBAR=0" > /etc/X11/Xsession.d/80overlayscrollbars
Reboot.
2- Make those scrollbars wider:
Now this is the tricky and confusing part. You will need to create a file called ~/.gtkrc-2.0
Go to terminal and again, "Sudo Su" and your Root password
Type in gedit ~/.gtkrc-2.0
This will open the editor.
Enter this in the editor:
style "scroll"
{
GtkScrollbar::slider-width = 25
}
class "*" style "scroll"
Save the file. It will save in your Home folder and that is where it should be.
Reboot and this will make your scroll bar wider.
Not wide enough? change the number 25 to the desired width.
Im using 11.04; im not sure if the above would work with other versions...

i changed to linux mint 9 , and now everything is working straight away. Videos runs smoothly and Fn+combinations works and shows on the screen right away without any "hacking"
-
Looks Minty
Id like to try it... How about the touch screen? -
touchscreen works straight away..

Were you able to install 11.04 on the cf-18 without any blackscreen problems after install? Everytime i install ubuntu 11.04 on my cf-18 i get a black screen after reboot. Ubuntu 10.10 works fine though. Did you have to change your xorg.config file in console afterwards?
-
When you install do you check the boxes to upgrade? Tomorrow sometime I'll check back in. The upgrades may help. Your complete model number would help diagnose the issue. Like CF-18etc. First bios page will show it if the label is gone. I'm thinking Intel issues at this point.
