So i've been searching for the actual discs or images of the recovery disks as we have a few 18's that need to be formatted. Can anyone here assist me with this?

    Thanks alot!

If it's for your CF-18DHAZXKM touchscreen units ,Topcop has given you a good link to the disks

Do these amount to a new Windows license or do you need that separately?

When utilizing the genuine Panasonic CF-29 Series Product Recovery CD-ROM set, the Microsoft Certificate of Authenticity (COA) on the bottom of the unit constitutes the license related to that particular unit. Therefore, all you are doing is restoring the unit, at least OpSys-wise, to the condition that had when it left Panasonic's factory.

    Ergo, no new/additional license necessary.

Thanks. My problem unfortunately is more complicated. I've upgraded my motherboard. I don't know if that contravenes the license, but the original restore discs certainly won't work. A restore disc for the same model as the new motherboard might work, but would it be legal?

In a word (three actually ;)), "No" (license), "Yes" (MoBo Mk#) and "Yes" (legal).

Then your solution is to get the restore disks that match the new motherboard
Or ,you can install using an oem windows xp pro disk using the COA from the bottom of the cf-18
In that case you will need to install all the correct drivers ,in the correct order

Here is a post that explains the driver order

Thanks a lot TopCop1988 and Tomcat57, that sets my mind at rest if I need to follow that route.

Is it possible though to transfer my existing license - preferably, my existing installation - onto the new hardware? I heard running a Repair install from a full Windows disc would do the trick of installing all the missing drivers. When I tried this though it asked for a key, and neither the original one or the Windows disc's one would work.

Puzzling... Would it be because the Windows disc was retail rather than OEM? Or because it was Pro rather than Tablet PC? (Or both!?)

Nope! The only way to get the Toughbook drivers, outside using the Product Recovery CD-ROM set, is to download them individually from Panasonic and manually install them.

It's a lot easier to use the Recovery set.

Go the Recovery set and make it easier on yourself.

    I know you're right, but I love a challenge!

I do have the drivers for the Mk5 hardware - downloaded via this forum I think - and I wonder if there's any way to slipstream them into an install image?

I don't know, but I highly doubt it.

    This should help:

    Title: [ Install Instructions ]
    Model Number: CF-18N/P(Mk5) CF-18[N/P][H/J/K/L/N/M]xxxBx
Operating System: Windows XP Pro SP2
    Language: English
    Release Date: 04/11/2006

I have had to straighten out windows instalations from customers that thought that transfering a hard drive from one to another would work
It usualy fails ,drivers are messed up , this is not recomended
I install a proper fresh load and it works like new

Tablet PC should no even come into this discusion unless you have a cf-18 digitizer
It might be helpful to tell us if your upgraded cf-18 is a digitizer as I am giving recomendations based on a touchsceen
The key on the bottom on touchsceen units is XP pro OEM
No other discs will load using that key

    Agree
Too many drivers used on the CF-18/19 models
Its best to use the recovery disk

I have never had any luck slipstreaming drivers
The recover CD's are not normal instalation disks btw ,they are an image of the hard drive

Good info as it lists all the drivers , but you must follow my link and follow driver order to the letter

I decided last night that I would buy the recovery set - to find that the linked advertiser had sold out, darn it. Can anyone recommend another source for these? Is it all right to advertise for them in the Trade Forum?

So I may be forced to do it the hard way... Yes, it is a Digitizer. Originally a BD model, now with the motherboard from an ND. Does that mean I'd need a Tablet PC Edition Windows disc?

If it's a digitizer yes you need a Tablet windows disk. Did you email the seller to see if he has more, my guess he does have more :)

Could you clarify what you have please
The recovery disks are linked to the motherboard only
What motherboard are you using mk# and need to know if its a touchscreen or digitizer
That info is found by hitting F2 while booting
After you load using the restore disks you can download and use the wacom digitizer driver
This is the easy way btw

Mk 5 Digitiser - but I've already done most of the job the hard way. I had to use a little... footwork which perhaps I shouldn't go into in detail here, essentially making my own OEM Tablet disc. But I'm pretty sure the end result is legal - it accepted my key and activated at least. I'm writing this on it now.

So far I haven't installed the Panasonic drivers though, as much of the hardware hasn't been moved from my old board yet. Apart from downloading all the updates this is pretty much raw XP. I'll image it while it's still pristine, then get some sleep and tackle the hardware and driver installs in the morning...

    @ Driller

Sounds like you need to try a different usb optical drive
If you are restoring with the wrong disk the message
"This machine does not support " comes up
Btw this wording has been the same for years ,
    I suppose it's a bad translation from Japanese ,
Just wish they would talk the queens english

ya lu blu tabia, or something real close to that, it's russian, an old roommate spoke 5 languages and told me to tell that to a female classmate and that it would make quite an impression. it did and it ain't the queens english. I think I'll go searching for for another drive , do you have any particular brand model number source that you've had luck and no compatibility issues with that you think would work? thanks..........Driller
oh, the russian phrase, it isn't vulgar, really, but I was one of 90 men on a campus of over 5000 women at the time, whew!

I'm with TC on this one. Put some forum members through he11 with what I thought were bad restore disks, turns out that my quite good Samsung USB drive just wouldn't read the disks. Saw them fine, but kept reporting missing or corrupt files, sometimes it waited to get cranky until the third disk was loading. I've got a big Sony external DVD burner that works great, got it at the dump, but it needs external power.

That's the one. I'm not saying you need it, just that I have one I found at the swap shop at the dump and it works great. Tom Cat has a USB powered one that works, I don't recall which one. Amazon has the Sony for $30 to $40, so why not?

I'm with the Capt'n and TC, You have a bad cd disk. I encountered this type of trouble not only once. Anyway, you can make an slim cd rom drive from cheap adapter available on ebay for only 8buck. I used this type of adapter when loading OS to a unit without a builtin cd rom drive and I can change cd rom to dvd drive when it needed specially those new unit with dvd recovery disk.

"No recovery disc no experience & do it yourself the first time = Find out how Tough it really is when you throw it out the window!"
Also if it's not the right disc for your board it won't run and usually tells you it's not. The bios should give you the correct model#

Driller have you tried this DVD drive on another toughbook like your 51 to see if it worked or not ? I would even use the restore disk from the 18.....if it tells you that its the wrong disk then it must be working and the problem must be with the 18.

I did use it with a cf-18 BHAZXKM a mk1 with the cf-18 mk2 restore disc and it told me they were not for that model. makes me think it is working. but put in the mk2 model a cf-18 DHAZXKM win xp pro oem disc and it took off and loaded everything, but now I'm looking at the panny drivers to put in. It surely(don't call me Shirley...Leslie Neilson) would be easier to get it done with the panny restore disc. JB007Rules is sending the mk1 discs and I've got a new caddy coming in as well. A sony cd/dvd external drive is on the way as well. we'll see how all this "pans" out.....Driller

I got the restore disc from JB007Rules for the mk1 and went in to restore the cf-18BHAZXKM with what was the original caddy and 40GB hdd. still using the LG dc/dvd drive and Y cable it balked and fussed and I had to reinsert and start throughout the entire process but it looks like it's working. will use new caddy and new hdd for the mk 2 if I'm lucky with the sony drive. will keep you informed.........Driller

That's great , I do find you must take your time between disks or you will get an error. I give it about 20 seconds between each disk, enough time to get the cd up to speed. I have never had a problem. :D

    Re: CF-18 MK2 Recovery Disks
    Hi all-
Newbie here, trying to get restore disks for CF-18DDAZXMM; have tried generic tablet disks, but can't get kbd, rotation, etc buttons on front of unit to work. Anybody know where I can get a working set? I don't usually have problems w/ xternal cd drives; have more than I need. Any help greatly appreciated.
