I recently upgrade my old cf-18 MK4 with an extra 1gig SODIMM. All works as I expected, the issue I have is heat...
I swear that the area near the speaker/ram cover generate considerably more heat than I recall before. Not sure if it is normal or signs of an issue. I did notice that there seems thermal tape to act as heat sink on the cover. This would explain the extra heat generated by the stick of RAM.
It is 1GB DDR2 5300S-555 SODIMM. Appears to work properly...

My Mk3 has that same speed RAM module. No noticeable increase in heat but much faster with memory upgrade and in case you missed the obvious, the CF-18 doesn't have a fan and relies on the chassis as a heat sink.
I'm guessing it feels hotter only because you're using it more? -
rather than start a new thread I thought I'd resurrect this one.
I have a CF-18KHHZXBA. It currently has 512MB of ram (that it came with). My research tells me that it has one spare slot that can take a maximum of 1 extra GB of RAM.
My research also seems to suggest that the correct RAM type for my laptop is DDR2-533 (ie PC-4200). So I was thinking of getting something like this ( http://www.ec.kingston.com/ecom/config/partsinfo.asp?ktcpartno=M12864E40) Am I correct so far?
I'm a little confused however, as when I use the CPU-Z program on the laptop it tells me that the rated FSB speed is 400MHz. Doesn't this mean that the RAM speed should be DDR2-400 (ie PC-3200) for maximum compatibility and speed between the laptop and the RAM?
Any help would be appreciated
edit: the other question I forgot to ask was whether putting DDR2-800 RAM in my laptop would work? My local computer store said that they only stock DDR2-800 now. -
The problem often experienced with Toughbooks (although they are not alone) is what ram will work in any particular model. While the earlier TB's were more prone to be "picky" in the ram they will take, there are still some that will not work with certain brands of ram. Unfortunately, unless someone in these forums has already tried succeeded/failed in their attempt to use a particular brand in any given model, trial and error is still the test of choice. However, most are backwards/multi compatible when it comes to the speed of the ram, but nothing is necessarily guaranteed. There are several sources (including the stickies in this forum) that will provide good info on what model uses what ram, to include brands on some. But ultimately you are still the decision maker as to try any particular type.

EXCEPT when doing the 2GB upgrade on a 256MB base RAM CF-29 Mk4/Mk5.
Crucial Technology does not show those units to be 2GB-upgradable (but we know they are).
