The hole behind the GPS is for a head set for voice enabled WWAN modems.

The factory location for the OEM GPS antenna is where the larger block out is just forward of the headset hole. You should have no problems with your GPS antenna in either location although I'm not sure what you mean by problems.

    Sgt,
If that was a CF-28, I would suggest following Rick's antennae mod. Mine was done in his fashion.

I've only had the CF-18 briefly and didn't have the time yet to pry it open. Sorry, no recommendations but do get hold of a service manual. Never know when it'd come in handy.

You'd probably need a SMA~N connector pigtail to hook up a cantenna. Regardless, do post your handiwork once completed.

ok so hear is the update...

    parts list

    2x 16" Gold Plating U.FL to RP-SMA Pigtail
1x RP-SMA 2.4 GHz 16dBi WIFI Booster Wireless Antenna WLAN
    1x Engenius 600mW 802.11abg ECB-8610+s

Idea... put external antenna on CF-18 mk1
reason .. long distance wifi becuse i live in the sticks
    results... still to come

ok so i want to keep both stock antenas working and have the external hooked in at the same time is this possible bye using the bulk head connector?
now the exteranl wont always be in use for around the home, but will be when camping or out and about, so id like to have everyhting hooked in at once so i
dont have ot open it up to hook up external. any suggestions, solutions or ideas are welcome.

go fo it. It may have a little effect but not much. The only problem is when you are on the urban area that I say will not be the same as before.

16dBi??!!! Man... that's a long one! :D Where do you plan to mount the RP-SMA connector? Do post pics up when you're done and ya, where did you buy that antenna from? IIRC, mine are 7~11dBi, used in urban areas. Paddle-style antenna will work fine at home.

Beware of specs on the omni-directional antenna's
I have a outdoor Yagi 13.5 db attached to my access point and I beleve it's specs, but most indoor antenna's will not output more than a honest 5 db
