    Hi All,
I am new to the forums here, nice to find a place for toughbook heads!

Well I recently picked up a cf-19 mkii second hand and had reloaded it with XP Tablet Edition. Everything installed great, only one unknown driver in which I am assuming is the wireless broadband card that was in there.

Now my sound was working fine a couple days ago and I just noticed it's no longer working. I plugged in some headphones and the sound is working there, all my hotkeys for the audio controls are working as well. System is sp3 fully patched and has all of the latest panasonic drivers installed. I have tried removing the audio drivers and reinstalling but this did not change anything.

I fear that either the speaker/s?(honestly not sure if there are two or just one in the 19) just died or that something may have come loose inside. Although I would imagine this being a toughbook and all that all the internal points are clamped down well but I guess you never know.

So if any of the gurus here have any recommendations or advice for me, it would be greatly appreciated!!

    Thanks in advance!

    -Todd

check the device manager for sigmaltel audio codec. If it has a mark next to it then there is your problem. You need to right click on it and then select properties. After you are there then hit roll back driver. Once you do that reboot and try the speaker again.

This has happened to me i dunno how many times.

    Hi James,
Well I do not have the sigmaltel audio codec listed, just the SoundMAX Integrated Digital HD Audio. Also all of device mgr is clean, no warnings or errors aside from the uninstalled wireless broadband card.

Sound is still coming from the headphone jack so it appears that the driver is operational.

    Thanks,

    Todd

Check your audio settings sometimes there is a setting for letting audio only out of the rear ports.

i doubt the speaker is bad unless you played super loud sounds and blew it out.

I am running vista now but make sure that it shows what i have in the red box or it is not even seeing the inside speaker.

I am digging though all the settings but can't find one for exactly what you pointed out. I will post some screens of my settings in a bit, have to take my son to basketball practice now.

And no to the loud music, mostly streaming video and a little music. But not even slightly loud volumes.

It does seem like something is missing out of the SoundMAX control panel, there is a section for mic and general, under general just a checkbox for the tray icon, it just seems like there should be more settings available. Again some screens a bit later. maybe someone who has a 19 and xp can verify if what I am seeing is correct or not.

    Thanks again James!

well here are the screenies, not looking like they are going to help too much if this is the same as you guys are seeing its really starting to look like a hardware failure. I will try and boot into WinPE or another flash based os and see if I have any sound.

    Thanks again fellas!!

I doubt this would have anything to do with it but did you install the modem drivers? Not the wireless card but the actual 56k modem drivers?

I have had a few laptops that acted really weird when the modem was not installed or installed incorrectly.

For some reason the HD audio was on the same bus or something.

Everything looks ok by the screen shots so i am not sure what is going on.

If its not the drivers then could it be something as simple as the hotkeys either F4 mute or F5 + F6 volume control?

Hi Alex, well the hot keys are working fine, when using headphones they are doing all they should be. When you mute the system, it shows mute in the cpl applet so I know those are functioning.

and Zippy-man, Yes the modem drivers are installed, although TBPH I can't say I have even tested the functionality. It's been literally years since i have used one. :D

Well you might have a bad speaker then. It seems everything is working but the inside speaker. If no one else has any ideas maybe try re-installing windows.

Make another small partition and just load windows again to see if you can get it working.

If that does not do i then you know that the speaker is bad. I know that you have tried to uninstall the drivers and reinstall them but it might just be messed up somewhere.

I had my cf-19 that had digitizer problems, the digitizer pen would not calibrate in the corners of the screen sko i uninstalled all the drivers re loaded the drivers multiple times and even tried other drivers i figured it was something wrong with the screen. Then i reloaded windows on the machine to get a clean install loaded all the drivers and the problem dissappered. Not sure what was causing it but now it works perfect.

It might be worth a shot if you have some extra time.

Agreed, it may be the only way. I do have one little trick up my sleeve, I am building a PE disk with the drivers all loaded and will see if booting into that environment will give me sound. If it works then I will reload, if not, well time for some surgery.

    Thanks again all!!

The cf-19 speaker is located below the LCD not just like his brother cf-18 located at the buttom. You need to open up the lcd which is not hard as I can see. Theres no need to open up the buttom part of the unit unless that the trouble is loose connection on the Mbo. or beyond.

One hint from my side: the laptop-audio-socket for ur headphones has an switch inside to deactivate the internal speaker if an plug will be insert and vice versa. mostly there is a problem with the integrated switch (dust...disformed...)

Do they use a switch on the toughbooks? I thought all of that was done by software lol. Maybe i am completely wrong about that i didnt know there was a switch.

No, What he mean is that on the speaker jack plug connection. As you observe when you hook up a headphone or outside speaker there is switch that the internal speaker will be off and when you pull the plug out the internal speaker will be on again. Its an internal switch not accesible outside.

Ya i understand but i thought the software controlled the switching. Like maybe it sensed power was being sent to the rear ports and then shut off the inside speaker. I did not know there was an internal switch that did this.

Let me explain: I think there are some confussion here. It is not a regular switch with a push or pull botton that you can see on a regular basis. Its a some kind of spring bar that is inside on the speaker/headphone jack (socket) that when you plug the headp..plug, it push the spring bar and it will allow to disconnect(openline /off) the circuit/conductor/wires line that goes to the internal speaker and thats what Onirak..... are reffering to. It is a universal standard for those device with headphone/speaker jack(socket) and have an internal speaker.

Offtopic: I am very sorry! I cannot expain it very well indeed as I am not really good in English thats why I failed my first class english 1 in High school. :D

    Hi all,

we have 150 Panasonic Toughbook CF-19. Suddenly a few months ago we have the same problem in our environment.

The only way to solve this problem is to restore the original Windows XP from the Panasonic Restore DVD. When we put back our own image (build with sysprep) it is possible that the sound from the internal speaker is lost from the beginning. Some after a few weeks, most of them without a problem.

Does anyone have found a solution for this problem?

    Hi Todd,

There is no problem with your speaker.
If you reset the bios to factory defaults and restore the sytem with the additional recoveru CD/DVD your sound will be working again, however when you install windows with the microsoft CD or DVD your speaker does not give sound, but when you use a headphone, the sound works properly.
We are examaning this problem, but we do not heve a solution yet

Try this, I have used it on cf-19s and cf-29s that played sound only from the headphone jack

    control panel/add remove programs

    uninstall hotkey appendix
    uninstall hotkey manager

if it says some files cannot be removed without rebooting, you usually can ignore them (if not do it all again without ignore)

    reboot

sound should work at this point this last step is to make the hotkeys work again

then goto c:\utils (by default) or where your drivers are and launch setup.exe in hotkeymanager and hplsman folders

i think it has something to do with windows because the speaker works when i boot in linux...

    cheers and good luck

This is a big bump.....about a year and a half. I realise this is for a CF-19 but it sounds like my problem

    What is the fix here?

I checked the speaker by hot-wiring it from another 29. Works fine. Headphone jack works. Running Linux but I also ran XP-Pro for a while with no speaker on either of them.
I guess what I am needing is someone to say "yeah jump in there". Or "whoa hoss, this is over your head".
It will be interesting either way.

    HI
just had a similar problem with mycf-30 mk3, in that once i had installed win7, the sound would not come pput the internal speaker.
when i installed, i only used the drivers for win7 from tha panny web page. to resolve the problem, in have now installed drivers for hotkey apps and settings, that are used for installing win7 onto a cf-30 mk1. i got the drivers from tough talk forum.
now, i am no exspert, and i may have my logic wrong about the different drivers, but the problem is solved, and the sound is loud!

Yeah, but like my Avatar I'm somewhat:laugh: bullheaded and don't believe it's drivers. It reads more to me like what Teo said in his post .....some type of switch issue.
Thank you though. I've got the panny disks for a Mark IV and will reload those to confirm it before getting out the wrecking bars. And I was going to do a clean Linux Mint install too.

It's just a matter of time before I take the mother board out or whatever. It's the only part that I haven't looked under yet.

I purchased my CF-19F from a local auction last year and when I wiped the XP install to make a clean install, then upgraded to Win7 Pro 32-bit, I lost the audio. Worked fine with XP Pro SP3 before I did a clean upgrade. Now, I have the same reported issue with no built-in audio, but headphone and mic ports are fine. No problems register in Control Panel, and the SoundMax setup is correct. I doubt there is a switch problem since it is directly tied to the upgrade to Win7 and I noticed the lack of built-in audio during the config process. XP drivers were initially installed right from the Panasonic provided driver disc, then I tried Vista Drivers, then I tried the Win 7 drivers from the mkIII.

Interestingly, the Win XP Pro it came with didn't match the OEM COA, which is for Vista Business.

All CF-19 Mk2's came with a Vista COA, even the XP downgrade models. They came with 2 restore discs, one for XP and one for Vista. The XP disc would be either Pro SP2 or Tablet depending on whether it was Touchscreen or Digitizer. The Vista disc is the same whether TS or Digitizer.

Here is the trick to make the sounds work on win 7. Extract the sound driver(sound max) xp driver oe vista driver. Usually it goe to util. Then go to device manager under audio. Update driver not by using browse but on "have a disk" then go to where the folder store and hit I think wd or something, i forgot but its all there on file untill you hit inf..or something then follow and your set. reboot the pc. If still doesn't work go to util folder under sound and hit the exe. file.

Edit sorry! about the wording I am using the rubber keyboard, Lol

@db04p71: Thx for the info on the COA. Too bad there were no restore disks for these at the auction. :-( Appreciate the info though.

@ohlip: I have tried this several times before, but went back through your suggestion and uninstalled the drivers, restarted, and through Win7, the driver tries to load automatically on restart with no way to stop it, then I went to Device Mgr and did a manual driver update, which it took (the files are in C:\util2\drivers\sound\). Then after successful install, I restarted. Still No Joy! :-S

Everything in Win7-land looks good, but no sound from the speaker still. As far as Win7 is concerned, it is working.

I'm still open to other suggestions.

On a happy note, I found the right way to get all 6 touch buttons on the front working due to the info on this forum :) Thanks!

You have to forced out the hda driver that came out from win 7 and install the soundmax driver. Or try first to uninstall the hda and then install the sound max audio driver that I instructed above by doing "have a disk" Thried every file until you hit the right one. I've forgot the file name since the unit I have was sold already. But it there 100% sure.

Sound works perfect on the mk-1 using drivers suplied with W7
What did you install before the loss of sound ? must be a driver or software fighting with the stock W7 driver that works as is

Its possible but not sur .

The computer make sound like it find a new hardware when i start the CF19 x3 and after no sound . I put in the rear jack a "speaker" and it work but when i plug unplug 2 time no sound .

I put my HDD with Xp on it and sound work so its not a hardware problem .

I put my HDD with seven uninstall sound drivers and try t o install XP drivers but Seven install is drivers i test with Vista drivers exactly same wont install .

But when i plug now a speaker in the jack the sound work but not in the speaker of the CF19, but it work with XP .

I think the problem is when i install HASP Key Drivers for a software its the last i install before the sound problem . Its possible that i update the bios before install Seven, all work after but possible make bad issu with chipset ?

My only way is to make a new install of Seven because flash bios after is not good, some hardware dont work if the Vista bios is not flashing .

I test with Linux and USB stick but no sound with the Vista bios when oi have XP bios Linux sound work . Possible that say smart0187 a solution for clear all ? I test tonight i make a backup of my hard drive and put a fresh install .

Thanks Tomcat57 for reply just please can you MP a list of drivers and software you used for your install ? That make a big help for me, i read the post of put Seven on CF18 mk1.

    Thanks again

I had a list of the drivers used when I first loaded W7 in my mk-1 digitizer ,but that was long ago
At the present time I have no panasonic drivers loaded , only the drivers W7 installed when originaly loaded
The hotkeys are not even installed ,but I have control of screen brightness and the digitizer panel works perfect

Also, if you don't have Hotkey appendix (it's normal for Win7 x64) - install it, unmute sound and uninstall it again :)

I am adding to this old thread because it's still the top result for this problem on Google!

My CF-19 mk3 had exactly the same problem - no sound from the internal speakers but perfect sound through the headphone jack. All drivers claimed to be up-to-date and functioning. To make matters even more confusing, occasionally the internal speakers DID work, despite there being no changes to settings etc.

I contacted Panasonic support and they advised me of the following:

In my case, I found that I did not have Hotkey Appendix Utility on my machine, and Hotkey Settings existed but was not installed. I downloaded the missing driver from the Panasonic support website, then followed the instructions above.

Immediately on completing the steps, even before rebooting the laptop, the sound was perfectly restored. It now appears to be working reliably.

    Hi guys,

Old topic I know, but I have discovered a very simple workaround that you can do in less than a minute and doesn't even need admin or drivers :)
I accidentally discovered it myself after messing around and looking for answers a fair bit.

The method is (without anything plugged into external jack of course):
    1) play something that has audio (eg - an mp3, youtube video, whatever) and confirm the computer thinks sound is playing
    2) while the sound is still "playing" (though you cannot hear it), put the PC to sleep via the regular methods of doing so (both shutdown menu/sleep and closing the lid when set to sleep appear to work fine).
    3) when you resume the pc it appears to initialise the built in speaker as expected and it will play sound :)

    For reference:
I have a cf-19 mk3 on windows 7 64 (and had a previous cf-19 mk3 - earlier mk 3 meant for distribution in a different country - for reference, current one is CF19-QJREX2M - US model with touchscreen, previous was CF19-KDRANCA - Australian market model with dualtouch screen)

Appears to need repeating occasionally, I never had the problem before I first used headphones on either mk 3 (I now have only the QJREX2M)
I will try what badgerlady suggests about hotkey appendix utility though... see if it makes it never happen again :)

And some various rambling and thoughts on other toughbook topics:
    Lovely machines the toughbooks!

Though the rubber keyboards irk me hugely, luckily like a number of other parts, the keyboards swap between a surprising range of options.. I am currently running a cf-18 keyboard on this cf-19 mk3 actually, to spare myself the frustration of the rubber backlit one whilst trying to touchtype - this is handy info for you to know :)

I have also had a mk2 (CF-19FHNANAA) running win 7 64 for quite some time and run a few other cf-19mk2s and cf-19 mk1s on both windows xp and windows 7 (mk1s can be a right sod to set up win 7 on, and if you don't want pain avoid installing xp pro on a digitizer model mk3 ... at least if you want any working touchscreen/digitizer drivers.. darn stubborn thing... use xp tablet instead :)
None of the mk1s or mk2s I have used has never suffered from this sound stopping error, but both the mk3s have.. and both resolved via this method :)

oh, and a really useful fellow has packaged toughbook drivers into "one click" packages to make things easier for us toughbook fans.
He appears to install them in the correct order and have assembled packs for the non-standard windows OS options for various models also
And he includes instructions on making your own
    just google:
toughbook one click bundles Brian Gonzalez
and you will find them, tops fellow by the look of it - and nothing to do with little old me, I'm an enthusiast not a pro :)

This is a great tip! That sound problem is often asked about.
