Hey all, I'm on the road and at a loss. I don't have my spare hard drive & this situation is a conundrum: Booting up I get a blank screen in the background, with ONLY my Welcome Screen which says "welcome to Linux Mint edition MATE 32 bit and several choices: Documentation, Support, Project, Community. I can go to these choices, and actually went to the forum on their site, and then changed the address in the toolbar at top of page. Wondering if anyone has any thoughts an/or solutions other than having my wife meet me in Albany this weekend and bring a spare hard drive with her. Cheers! Cleve

Kinda like this? Can you [ctrl][alt][F3] to a login?
If you tap your caps lock key does it light the light. (shows if completely frozen or if it lights it's in the OS or something)

    login
    password
    Code:
    ls #for directory (not necessary)
dmesg# to see last few lines...look for errors

The # separates the explanation from the code. :)

We'll start with that. Then we may try to find your error log. I need to look that code up. If you want to look for it you can log in as sudo su (a little dangerous but doable)and find out how to read the error log from command line.
Can you disable acpi from bios? don't do it yet.
    Are you dual boot?

Edit: You should be able to safely do
    Code:
    sudo apt-get update #and
    sudo apt-get upgrade
There may be some fixes in already.
[ctrl][alt][F7] takes you back to desktop.

Thanks Jeff, Yes, cntl-alt-f3 takes me to terminal, am able to log in with user & password. Caps button lights up the "A" on the panel of lights below touch pad & front button panel.

You know, might be better to wait and re-install...

Where's the fun in that? It's just a computer. :D Course your old system probably has like valuable files and stuff.

    Seriously...nothing in dmesg?

I think I have a box with Mint on it around here. I "may" get back to you.:hi2:
