    Hello,

My CF-19 has been working great but for some reason the internal speaker is not showing as a playback device, only SPDIF. Headphones do work.

When I try to reinstall the coexant driver from panasonics website it say that no media device was found. A generic windows high def audio driver installs itself but again no internal speakers.

I am leaning towards this being a hardware issue but:

-I cannot reinstall driver which makes me think software

-The sound card is working as headphones work

-SmartAudio control panel fails to initialize when clicked

Has anyone had experience with this? I am going to open up the laptop tonight and take a look. Can anyone tell me which wire runs from the speaker to the soundcard?

Any suggestions would be great, I've googled this like crazy and have been playing with drivers for two days. I'd rather not reformat as the systems finally setup how I like it.

Backup and reinstall OS. Check whether your speaker works, restore your backup and repair drivers :)
Or just boot from Linux Live CD/USB flash.
Is your current driver Conexant 20584?

Current driver I am trying to install was from panasonic site but it never completes and the generic high definition audio installs.

Is there a way to backup all my installations before reinstalling? I have a ton of garmin gps maps installed and it takes forever to redo.

Tomorrow I am going to throw in a different HD and reinstall to confirm if its the speaker or software. If its software I'll bite the bullet and redo my setup next weekend.

I'll give it a shot tonight Shawn thanks.

It mention removing battery, AC, CMOS battery and some recommend RAM. Is the RAM removal really necessary?

And you will need a special device to remove CPU :)))
Try Linux Live CD. It's fast and free. Do not touch hardware if you really don't need that step.

Right, but we've found that fixing the hotkey driver has solved a variety of issues with audio. The permanent mute problem is just the most common. That said, I think it's a long shot for OPs issue. I just thought I'd throw it out there.

I will pass your suggestion on to one of our techs so we can test it out and see about improving the article. Thanks.

    Ok,

I reinstalled windows onto a new hard drive using my MK4 recovery disk and it still only shows s/pdif in the audio settings and two sets of headphones, no internal speaker.

Can anyone tell me where the internal speaker actually connects to? I think mine may be bad or the connection loose. I am going to try a different sound card as well.

By sound card I meant board that contains the audio plugs. I am also in the process of a power pull reset, I'll update shortly.

Ok the power pull reset had no effect.

Can anyone provide any guidance onto changing out the speaker? And would a bad speaker cause no internal speaker at all to show up in Windows 7?

Go get Mint 17.1 mate, then get Lili usb and boot from usb to mint live.see if it works before you get into hardware cuz I bet it is drivers. Been there and done that on a CF-30.

loading a 'nix OS is a good idea (though i am partial to mint 13 w/ the MATE desktop) .
    other than that ...
have you tried plugging in a set of headphones ?
this will help eliminate a possible problem ... if the switching on the jacks is ok .

if there is a schematic available for this machine , i can dl it and take a look to better determine what is going on with the audio switching .

I will try mint 17 tonight in a bit and see if it does anything.

The audio from headphones itself works fine, when removed it only shows S/pdif available.

In the windows 7 audio control for playback devices it shows Spdif, headphones, and headphones. One headphones it designates as left side, one rear.

I'd agree that it sounds like a driver issue but wouldn't a fresh install of windows using the recovery disk with drivers preinstalled have corrected that?

I don't have a service manual for the MK4 but went through the one I have for the MK1 and am considering taking about the display and checking the speaker connection. I'll give the linux boot a shot first though.

    Ok...

    In Linux I have sound.

    I am very confused now...

I reloaded Windows 7 to a different hard drive using the proper recovery disk for my system and it didn't make the speaker work... but Linux does?

    Odd....
So to recap..NO sound in Windows...Sound in Linux
You have done a Power pull reset
and you have used the factory recovery disk...

Try manually loading the Hotkey drivers (all three)..then test the Hotkeys...
Next manually load the front button software....then test the front buttons..

That's the only ideas I have...

Here are some CF19 NO sound search results.

    The above is correct:

Sound from internal speaker in Linux

No sound from internal speaker in Windows on FRESH install from recovery disk - only S/PDIF and two headphones sound in playback menu

I have done a power pull reset.

I am reburning my recovery DVD and will reinstall windows one more time. If that doesn't work I will then install a non recovered version of Windows 7 and manually install all the drivers.

And no sound in XP either.. I am stumped. I could replace the speaker but if it works in Linux that wouldn't be the issue right?

Is there any bios settings for sound?

No,it's a combo of drivers that is causing the problem. I have had this happen on CF-52's and 30's.

I got it from Rob at toughbooktalk. I have also tried a non-recovery disk windows 7 install and it still won't activate the speaker.

A lot of times a windows disc will not activate the sound. It might be a bad download,I assume that's how you got it as opposed to a physical disc. May have got corrupted in the download.

Manually install the Common components and misc drivers. BUT....
download them separately from the Toughbook web site...
Then do the same for the audio driver....

No need to check the wiring if the speaker works in Linux....
Did you get the link I sent you?
