Ive been using a low milage vgc Mk4 for the last 2 years with 1tb ssd, ive got the chance to get a cheapish Mk6, big question, is it worth it, i know it's got a faster processor but would i be gaining a lot?.
Thanks

Yes
 Migrate with that SSD

Problem is the ssd has 9 partitions and they're all c drives, it would be nice if i could put the ssd and caddy straight into the mk6 and have it all up and running like in the Mk4 at 1st switch on but somehow i dont think that will happen, reloading all the software will be a nightmare

If you are using Win10 - I don't see any problem. Since Win7 I never made reinstalls, just put my caddy into mk3-mk7 (up and down) and update a few drivers

It's window 7 I'm using, so can I just swap the caddy and ssd from the Mk4 into the Mk6 and itll all be the same?

I think nothing bad will happen. It has to work.

I do hard drive mk jumps like that. I run windows 7 on those machines. Linux doesn't care, it repairs itself and boots.
I install the win7 driver bundle for the new machine while the hard drive is in the old machine.
Sometimes I need to boot into safe mode and repair a few minor issues.
The biggest issue I encounter is the drive mode is wrong and it blue screens. I then need to edit the registry and all is well.

I've used Fix hard disk controller program from Hiren's CD (USB in fact). But AFAIR it was necessary with XP only. Newer Windows do live with any controller changes.

This here is excellent advice, especially for chipset, graphics and most blue-screen inducing devices.SHEEPMAN! likes this.

Sometimes I install the bundle then uninstall the above mentioned devices in device manager. Shut it down and put the drive in the new machine.SHEEPMAN! likes this.

I'll have a play with the spare 1tb sata that I took out of the Mk4, I'll clone the loaded ssd with the sata and put that in the mk6 and see what happens, that way I've still got a functioning Mk4, then when Im 100% with it I'll do the big swap

Is this a recovery partition, if so how do I boot from it ?
Thanks -

Last page of BIOS.
There should be a listing for restore or recover -

Thanks Shawn.
When you say "last page" is that the boot section, also how do I boot onto system test or diagnostics mode, i think I done it on my of my other CF's to check front switches but can't remember
Thanks -

press F2 right at start up during blue Panasonic screen

Yes i can access the bios no problem but not seen anything in there regarding recovery or restore
Thanks -

I will boot my mk6 when I get home. Then I can post a photo and check the size of that partition

The System Reserved partition is the boot loader. You more or less already boot from it.

On my CF31 mk2 the recovery partition is 9.7gb
The menu item on the last page of the bios is repair computer.
It boots into a windows PE environment and then asks a couple questions.
One is 32bit or 64bit.
Full drive restore to factory specs using the partition in under 10 minutes on a spinning drive.Last edited by a moderator: Apr 28, 2017toughasnails likes this. -

Oh well not to worry, I did think it might be a recovery partition.
This mk6 is fitted with a

I have mc7750 (Verizon, LTE+EVDO), but, since we still don't have 4G in Ukraine, I prefer MC8355 (EVDO rev.B + HSPA).Liteace likes this.
