I recently bought a new CF-19 MK5 for cheap on ebay to replace the old CF-18. I slapped in a new SSD and 8GB of RAM and it's running Windows 10 beautifully. The one thing I noticed is that it says in the BIOS that it has 38080 hours! By my calculations that's over 4.3 years of continuous running time. Could this be right? What could it have been used for? It seems to be running like a top, should I be concerned? Thanks for any help/advice.

Not really. I have seen them with many more hours. Sounds like it was turned on and never turned off.

My CF-31 has hours close to that. I bought it years ago and I never turn it off. After installing an SSD I just set it to sleep when I close the lid. I reboot it every few days but, for the most part, it stays on all the time. I hate to say it... But it still looks brand new.

I think 44,000 was the most I have seen on a CF-19Mk1, just bought a beautiful CF-31 with 18,000 on it. Looks like it has never been used.

Thanks for the replies. So when it's in sleep mode it still counts as running time?

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep_mode
all manufacturers do some things a little differently ...
basically , there is a mode that a machine can enter and a "snapshot" or "state" of the comp is polled and stashed on the ssd or hdd .
the machine can then be powered down 100% ... when powered up , the information about the state of the comp at power-off is retrieved from storage and the comp is put back to the way it was just before the power switch was originally pressed .
think of it like shutting down a hotdog stand for the night ... everything is put away on a shelf , put in the 'fridge or put in a box ...
the owner exits and locks the door behind him .
come morning , the owner unlocks the door , enters and locks it behind him and grabs all the stuff he put away previously and put it back where it needs to be .
he then unlocks the front door and is open for business .

there is a lot of information available about how and why things are done and the differences between manufacturers ...
just like people , everyone seems to think that they have a corner on the best way to do a job .
this is reflected in the changes to the basic modes of "power saving" and rapid re-entry into a working state of the machines over the years .

Personally, I disable sleep and hibernation on everything.
I have seen too much data corruption and issues to trust them.

Ok, the CF-19 (MK5 anyway) does NOT count sleep mode as run time. I left it in sleep mode all day and the hours haven't changed. So that means this laptop has been on nearly it's entire existence which makes me a little uneasy, but it works perfectly so I shouldn't complain. It just goes to show you how bulletproof these things are.

i have two desktop machines that i have built ...
    they run/ran 24/7 ... no shut-down or sleep/hibernation .
one ran for just shy of ten years before taking a lightning strike ...
it's replacement is still running in the same manner .

Does anyone have a working CF-25? I'd be curious how many hours are on one of those (if they counted hours back then).

My husband has a 10 year old Acer laptop that is never turned off. I set the display to blank after 30 minutes, and drives to "Never" go to sleep. (Hard drives were replaced with SSDs.)

I'm inclined to believe that a Toughbook can easily beat that even if the hours in BIOS are high.

EDIT: Found 2 working CF-25s on eBay with Windows 98 installed. Those things are around 20 years old!

LOL... I would think a working CF25 would be a waste of electricity... Maybe Linux...

The ones on eBay have Windows 95, 98 or Dos, whichever you choose.

One advantage of Windows 95 over Windows 10 is as a "gaming rig". Windows 95 came with Solitaire, Freecell, Minesweep, and something else. (Hearts?) Windows 10 comes with no games unless you log into MS account to get them from "the Store".

My point being that a Toughbook would likely outgrow it's usefulness before it would die of too many hours.

I still have my very first Toughbooks. A CF-28 MK3 that Rick helped me setup a external antenna on. At that time that was a big mod for the 28. Man have we come a long ways since then :D

Yeah I still have my first toughbook which was a CF-18 MK2 with Windows 2000 downgrade which we needed at that time to run software that didn't run on XP. That laptop got all beat up from field work but it still boots up and runs good old Windows 2000 without a hitch.

Although I admire the Toughbooks for their mechanical endurance, I sold my really, really nice CF-29 to SaddleMaker (I think) ages (In computer life, a couple of years) ago. I wish I could afford to keep really nice Toughbooks as collectibles!!

    Maybe someday!!!

I use a CF-19 at work and its pretty much been in use 24/7 for over 7.5 years now. It's still going strong minus ripped off port covers and a cracked case.

I still got a CF-25 Mk2 I have been still working on, on and off. I had to buy a Mk3 just to get a good cd/floppy door. I have a dock for it, cd drive, floppy drive and a few other accessories. Big things I have been wanting to do with it is rebuild the battery and maybe upgrade to the Mk3 motherboard. (The Mk2 looks new, the Mk3 well it looked it's age before I took what I wanted and scrapped the rest.) It currently has a 4gb compact flash for a SSD drive for it. The ram is maxed out. Been meaning to put DSL on it but keep getting side tracked.

Other old ones I have are 07, 17, M34 Mk2, 28 Mk2-3, 29 Mk3 and CF-41(was hoping it worked as it had a national guard logo on the lid. Sadly the battery was leaking and I think that killed the insides)
