    Well,

I have not had sound working on my cf19 on w7 for the last year. I never could get it working and finally gave up. Last week though I cleared the bios and suddenly got sound when I rebooted. Needless to say I was ecstatic. Well four days later crushing defeat as the sound went away. I looked through the patches applied to the laptop through system restore and I don't see any driver updates.

I have looked through the web forum but, I could not find anything except the total W7 build info. Any ideas?

I am not sure what the problem is but could you post your full model number just so we can see which MK it is. I had W7 installed on my MK1 and 2 but the sound worked on both.

I just found this thread which is the problem I have had. I think I might have lost the sound when I used the CNTRL-F4 key to mute the laptop? The key still shows working on the taskbar but, no sound from speaker but, yes from headphones.

The below thread says I should install the hotkey appendix but, I am not sure which utility that is. Little paranoid since my front keys are working and I don't want to screw those up. It's been like two years since I put W7 on this so I don't remember much of the process.

AnswerThe Hotkey Appendix, which is an application software of Panasonic, should be installed to mute/un-mute speaker(s).<Cause>
    • Once speaker(s) is muted, BIOS remembers that in NVRAM(*1).To un-mute it back, the Hotkey Appendix is required. To install the Hotkey Appendix, run setup.exe as an administrator and follow the message. The Hotkey Appendix is located at c:\util\hkeyapp\setup.exe
    <Confirmation Method>
    • Open Start Control Panel - Programs - Uninstall a program (XP: Start -Control Panel - Add or Remove programs ), confirm the Hotkey Appendix is in list.
    • [Except; CF-D1 (No key board), CF-U1 (Fn and R key)]
Hit Fn and F4 key simultaneously, the speaker mute icon should be displayed on the middle of screen. If no icon is displayed, the Hotkey Appendix is not installed.

Thanks everyone! That fixed up the problem and provided a logical explanation why my sound stopped working. Why are people recommending to uninstall it after the repair? I assume in conflicts with something else?

this will only happen, if u are not installing the drivers and apps in the right order, which u can find in the install instructions on the panasonic website.

an fast workaround is to un-tick "hotkey appendix" in msconfig.

Why not? If I got an Tb with such problems, I flushed the disk and installed all utils in the correct order and voilà, everything was nice :)
is there something different from ur experience?

Yes, my experience is different :)
IMO Order is not important - I've tried to install in the "correct" order and had the same problem. Since then I usually install all drivers in random order with one final reboot and don't think about it :) It works same. It's a lottery :)))

The order of driver installation is important, but moreso, DO NOT UPDATE THE VIDEO DRIVER. The Intel video driver off the Panasonic site is a custom version. Even though Intel and even Windows Update may say an updated driver is available, DO NOT UPDATE.

If you downgrade to the Panasonic video driver, all will be well in the world and you can have sound, mute, AND proper brightness controls!

I know this is an older post, and was very hard to find, I wish I had found it a few months ago, But I wanted to add to it. I lost my screen brightness function keys on my CF-31 Win7 64bit system all because of Microsoft automatic updates, I did not figure it out until I upgraded to Win8/8.1 Pro 64bit using the drivers on the Panasonic Win8 website & all worked perfect just as when it was new, until the first Microsoft automatic update, (a new updated intel video driver was tucked in with all the other updates) then I lost my screen brightness function keys again, fixed it by "rolling back" the display adapter driver to the Panasonic version, so now all my computers have " Automatic Updating" turned off, & I choose what to update & when, all has been well for months now.

Thanks for having all this good information on this site! :)

Thanks for reposting this. I backdated my video driver to the one on the Panasonic site for Vista (I'm running Win7) for my CF-19 Mk2, reinstalled the Hotkeys appendix, and now I have working brightness with the indicator, PLUS I can use the mute function safely again. This old data gets buried, and these reminders help a lot.
