Microsoft Windows 8 Developer Preview is here.
This OS is very interesting, especially for our tablets - it's much more comfortable to use touchscreen in Windows 8 vs Windows 7. It's slightly faster too (boot etc) and has some interesting features.
I've tried to install, but Panasonic Misc driver doesn't work there - installs well, but other drivers don't see it.
Let's try to solve this problem together and use "latest and greatest" :)

GOOD LUCK with that! I tried the first publicly available version a few months back and, to be kind, it was "buggy". I doubt this version will be much better.

Windows 7 works just fine, thank you.

Developer Preview was stable enough and very fast on my test :)
And it's possible to switch to "classic" desktop mode when you don't need Metro interface. Windows 7 works fine, of course, but it's not designed for tablets... and for CF-19 in tablet mode.

it's possible now to switch to win7 interface inside of win8 :))
they promise Beta till March, and I think this OS becomes more and more usable :))
I'm sure Metro interface is not needed on desktops/non-tablet laptops. But on CF-19 it's very interesting :)

I've had the Developer Preview installed on my CF-18 for a few months - I reviewed it here. It's very likable, though of course not functional enough for everyday use. Very easy to install though and well worth trying out - as long as you set it up as a dual boot.

I do like the general idea of Metro. I think it looks good (though I wish I could change that shade of green!) and has a lot of potential. What I hope (and expect) is that we will be able to use full desktop apps via the Metro interface, and not have to dive into the desktop unless you need to be able to see two application windows at once. After all I use one application full-screen about 97% of the time.

Mine's the digitizer though, and it doesn't seem to be that well optimized for pen. Dragging in from the sides of the screen isn't too pleasant with the little step of the bezel there. I hope they're thinking about this, and it will not be just left to hardware design changes. It's hard to imagine a truly rugged screen mounting that doesn't have a lip.

Meh. It's Windows 3.1 tiled with 32-bit color density.

You will have no choice :))
I don't have time now - too much work, but as soon as I will have some time, I will install Win8 again. Hope we'll have Beta soon.
I think it will be very comfortable to use standard Windows interface in laptop mode and new Metro interface in tablet mode :)

I would rather to keep testing Android on my CF-18.

It's a slippery slope there, daddoo. First it's Beta install, then Metro interface... before you know it, you're knee-deep in Beta Butter and turning Metrosexual. ;)

Difference then was we had an established OS that after 10 years finally had the bugs tamed to the point where only the occasional can of RAID was necessary.

Now we have an OS that's barely 2, and they've been "leak-hyping" 8 for almost a year of that. What say we fix the Swiss cheese that is Win7 before we go changing horses again, shall we? 8 is an incremental update at best; putting a retarded (as in not as advanced as its peers) GUI on it is not going to make it any more than a Service Pack for 7 in my mind.

I love new & shiny but really... at this point, the OS is nothing more than the transmission in my PC. I'm tired of being expected to get excited over it, for the same reason I don't get excited over the transmission in my car.

I personally enjoy and find W7 very user friendly. I just can't figure out why all these companies have to rush "new" things out.

Because Microsoft, like all other huge companies in this country, is managed to please the analysts on Wall Street, not the consumers of the product. Executive compensation is based on short term stock price fluctuations, not the long term health and growth of the company. Microsoft has released new Operating Systems before they were ready for years to avoid the stock price hit they take when the Wall Street speculators issue "warnings" because they miss the announced release date. It would take several books to completely explain the morass that the speculators have created, suffice to say, just look around at the current lot of the middle class where you live. Short term manipulated gains win out over a healthy, thriving economy every time.
