    Rob,
What kind of pricing does Rugged Depot offer on an emissive keyboard for a 19K these days?
I love my TB, I love having a backlit KB, but the rubber one I have irritates me.
Really makes me wonder why it didn't drive me nuts in my military and public service years.

60 is a steal! I plaid 150 for a brand new unopened one and fought that wasn't expensive. Certainly if you consider how much I use it and how much easier it is to type in it when compared to the standard keyboard, emissive ones are worth it absolutly.

Do you realize how many of those I threw away after stripping the keyboard out of them? I still have about 3 or 4 to do that too.

Hi, i have the emissive keyboard on my CF-19 and i really really love it.. but me guessing it should always be used dry. I went off for inspection of few columns on site and my toughbook had a bit of a drizzle to moderate rain which i never even bothered much with the stock keyboard on. When i went back to office, the emissive keyboard is typing on its own in random even without pressing the keys.. and the keyboard is not responsive on the keys you intend to hit. I took it off and let it sitting in my humidifier for few weeks now.

Is my keyboard dead? Need help... :(

These keyboards are not water-resistant at all.
A cup of water and it's dead (I've killed two). Non repairable.
    Do not buy.

IF you need full water proof you need the rubber. I have always used rice on electronics I need to de-water.

the toughbook will only be as tough as the weakest link.. It defeats the purpose of a water resistant toughbook with keyboards that can't get wet..

Full rubber back-lit keyboard it is.

Standard plastic keyboard is waterproof too.
Rice will not help with emissive keyboard - it dies immediately and forever ;)

i tried the rice, let it sit inside my dslr's dry box for weeks.. they said wash it with 90% isopropyl alcohol and let it dry.. i did and let it dry for days.. and even let it dry on top of my NAF 845se tube amplifier (not letting it too hot, just reasonably hot..)..
    no go, its totally dead!

Rice doesn't work... it doesn't absorb moisture in the air, only on contact. Because if it absorbed humidity, you can't leave rice out in an open container... all rice would come in sealed airtight bags.

something happened to me just now.. i used my toughbook cf-19 on the field.. i put on a shoulder strap.. never noticed that my belt opened the dock port and had a reasonable breach of water on it. when i turned on, the screen went static.. i removed the battery and hard disk straight away and went back to office to open it, motherboard is wet..

i will leave it like this overnight.. wishing for the best tomorrow..

for people who works a lot on the field especially when raining.. put a tape on the dock port to prevent from accidental opening.. too much for water resistance for now.. :(

panasonic should seriously look into this flaw.. the dock port should have a flick type lock of some kind. not something that can easily slide.

Do not just leave it - use hairdryer!
These covers are different from one machine to another - some are very easy to open, some are almost impossible.

I read quite a lot of people opposing the hair dryer method.. I dismantled what I can dismantle.. Wipe off more traces of water on it.. I put about 3kg of uncooked rice in a garbage bag and put the toughbook inside it with the cover removed. I will leave it there until my wwan card arrives.. Maybe a week or two.

I hope it did not fry the motherboard. I asked a service center here and they are charging me more than how much I got this toughbook! :(

This is the reason why I have 2 CF-19MK2's...I have one for my 4X4 ATV which has the rubber keyboard. This 19 has seen snow, mud and lots of water and it's still going strong. The one in my pickup I have the emissive keyboard and that one goes from the truck to the house...that's it.

Silica gel is much more effective.
Or add seafood to that rice :)

This is why I prefer a tablet. No mechanical keyboard at all.
Currently I have a Motion C5v. IP54 rated. Which is good enough for rain...

But it's so darn hard to type lots of texts on a on-screen keyboards. And an extra keyboard isn't really handy either.

And even on a tablet it's still possible to open a port/dock accidental and get water inside!
IMHO tablets are for consuming or at the most referencing manuals/drawings. But not for creating. Unless you have a 24" tablet :)

One note is pretty amazing to use with a digitizer..I can hand write anything..
It needs to be a digitizer and not a touchscreen..
I would probably not want to write a novel with it though.

i use my cf-19 in tablet mode for opening and viewing construction drawings in the drizzle/rain.. paper drawings will be shredded in seconds! haha.. so just clicking here and there..

it seems that i have a happy ending.. after three days of the toughbook with rice inside a rubbish bag (..cant find a seafood though).. i put them back together today.. and voila! its alive!!

...and this is the most important tweak to those who dont use a port replicator..

    20140609_102719.jpg

Panasonic's millions of dollars of R&D budget and cannot do a more proper dock port access for the (supposedly) rugged toughbook. You listening... Pansonic? Im looking at you right now!

Hey Barr, I have been using the emissive (non-rubber) keyboard with much pleasure for a good two year, but sadly the keyboard started to die on me. Keys where becoming unresponsive, some got grindy, sticky, but it wasn't going as smooth anymore. I guess these keyboards are not as good as the regular ones in durability
I type a lot, really a lot, so a good keyboard is important for me, but I'm now back again to a regular standard keyboard. At least these are water and dirtproof. I hope :)

"Already got the socket and a T8300 ready for the 52 and with a little work it will fit. It's important that the heatsink plate sits flat on the CPU for good heat transfer of course. I'll use Plastigauge (Plastigage in USA?) to confirm alignment"

    UncleMack,

Where did you find the BGA socket adapter for PGA CPU? Hoping to do this mod for several CF-52 mainboards. Planning on upgrading my P8400 to T9900.

Any help or advice on the BGA adapter would be helpful? Also, is Plastigauge available on the internet, did you successfully pull off this mod. Sharp shooting here so apologize for all questions.

    Cheerio,

Welcome to the Panasonic Toughbook forum

Not really sure what thread you were reading but you posted this in the wrong thread. This thread is about the CF-19 keyboard.

You do know the 52 cpu is soldered to the motherboard ?? Let me know which thread you were reading and I will move it to it.
