I know that CF-27's have sound card problems, but from searching the threads I was unable to find an answer to my situation. I can hear the proper sounds coming from speaker, but there is a lot of background static. Is this a problem with the sound unit, or do I have a short somewhere between the sound unit and the speaker?
-
Sounds like a short.
-
Either a short or a bad or torn speaker...
-
...or bad capacitors !!!
-
Thanks everyone, now I know where to start.

Hey, my 27 has that problem. Low level static and sometimes it sounds like it wants to make regular sound but can't.
-
I have run into a corrupted/incorrect audio driver causing this...

Snap!Crackle!Pop! is what expect to hear from my breakfast cereal, not my laptop... -
Well if it is a driver problem, which driver would you suggest I try since I am running win xp on a mk4.
-
It is not a driver problem it is a hardware issue. This is a common failure on the PIII 500MHZ models it is a problem in the output amp of the sound chip. I have a couple units with the same problem never got around to doing any component level repairs so I can't tell you exactly what to replace except the whole motherboard.

Well... if this is a known weakness in the model, then I'm going to go with T2G on this one.
I've just had a LOT of problems with those d@mned Realtek AC97 series integrated sound chipsets. They sell to ANYBODY without validating the driver stacks; as a result, if you cannot get known good drivers from the OEM of your particular device (and believe me, there are TONS who don't keep them on their website), you may spend WEEKS trying different builds of the "AC97" driver until you find one that actually works. Total PITA.

Oh joy... little Marcus dwagon is now in the "bitey" stage...

Hi there. I have got three CF-27's Mk2 and they all have some sort of static sound in them. The sound is most noticeable when accessing the bios or accessing the harddrive (rumble noise). You can actually hear the bytes being thrown to the harddisk.
Two of the CF-27 have a high power speaker in the front (next to the wireless switches) and the noise is much more noticeable compared to the CF-27 with the weaker speaker at the bottom. I think it is an hardware issue and has something to do with improper shielding. I just turn the volume down a bit.
