    Gentlemen:
    Long-time lurker, first-time caller. Long-time ToughBook user.

I use them to support vehicle diagnostics in my shop. Up until very recently, they've done a great job.

Long story short, I got a 40 GB hard-drive to replace the 1.6 GB HDD in the CF-27. I'd been running ME and foolishly (even more foolish than replacing a usable HDD) "Upgraded" to XP. After installing XP, I'm not able to detect the diagnostic computer (using the serial port). Device Manager revealed a Yamaha DS1 sound card, I/O card. Sadly, I've not been able to get the Yamaha card to "start". I found a somewhat generic driver via Yamaha but everytime I try to install it I get an error indicating it won't start.

I've been trying to install an older OS but for some reason, that's not working either. As for the new HDD, when operated externally using an adapter cable, it seems to be fully functional and when in the CF-27, it does everything I ask it to do, with the exception of what I really NEED it to do.

I don't try to do anything exotic with my ToughBooks, and I did search before posting this up.

Anybody have any positive, productive suggestions? I'd prefer to not use the 12 gauge, number seven shot repair process :D

A fresh install would be a good idea
In the resource thread sticky you will find a link to drivers
Look at the older model links and at Modly's links on his server

Thanx! Now I just need to successfully install an OS now that I erased the XP that was causing problems.

It ran wonderfully on ME prior to the hard-drive swap.

I've successfully installed ME but every time I try to get the drivers for the sound card, etc installed, I get a fatal error exception.

I'm beginning to wonder if the hard-drive is as good as I thought it was.

Any other suggestions to get the I/O stuff to work?

    For I/O stuff

    Try reset bios to defaults
    or
Change settings (address) for the device in the bios
    or
Unistall in device manager , and see if they get found

    Thanx for the help Tomcat.

I finally got it to accept the drivers with of all OSs, Windows 2000!

So far, it's doing everything I need it to do. This was really confusing as I've had this ToughBook for several years and never had a problem and ever had a problem with the other three CF-27s I've had.

    All's well that ends well!

I should have suggested that. When I used a lot of CF-27s Win2K was loaded on all of them, just right.
