    Greetings from Memphis, TN ....

One of the guys at work bought a CF-28 from eBay. I must say, I'm impressed with the laptop. It did not come with a CD/DVD drive, only the FDD. However, he bought a CD/DVD drive from eBay. When it arrived, it had a minor issue. It will read CDs fine, but insert a DVD and it just sits there ... you can hear the drive clicking, but nothing happens.

He contacted the seller who took the drive back and gave a full refund. So he bought another CD/DVD drive on eBay from a different seller. It arrived, and same problem.

I have not opened the sled to verify the physical drive, but I have no reason to suspect that it has been swapped to a generic. Especially considering both drives gave the same symptoms. The drive is a Panasonic DVD-ROM & CD-R/RW Drive Pack, model CF-VDR282.

The driver that loads is the Mashu****a driver.

I'm at a total loss here. The CD portion works fine. The drive shows up in the Device Manager as the correct drive w/ CD and DVD. But ... the DVD just won't work.

I've spent all morning searching this site and the 'net ... no luck so far.

    I appreciate your assistance ..

I tried a commercially produced data DVD, a commercially produced video DVD, and a video DVD that I burned in a set-top DVD recorder. Nothing. When you look at the drives in My Computer, it shows up as if the drive is empty.

I disassembled the carrier to make sure that the drive was correct, and it is a Panasonic drive.

Everything else works on this laptop. If I install the FDD into the bay, it works fine. CD's read fine in the drive.

    /me is stumped ...

have you got everest on ur laptop??????????
if not download pc wizard 2007 and see what it says about ur drive????????
to get a exact firmware is going to be really hard, most around are to make the drive a slave which you dont need...............

Replace the CD with a DVD R/W for $65 and have a $300 drive!

I thought about that, but I hate to tell the guy to spend $65 and "we'll see if that works." I mean, if the original Panasonic drives didn't work, and we tried two different ones, then I suspect that putting in a 3rd party drive and soldering the jump won't work either.

But, it may just be a problem with the XP drivers for the Panasonic drive, and putting in a Sony drive would solve it.

If you've tried two different drives and neither works I doubt it would be a driver issue. You amy want to look for a bent pin where it inserts. You may need to open it up to take a look!

DJACID ... I've tried two different drives already, both do the same.

The guy who owns the laptop doesn't think it's a big enough deal to warrant me tearing the whole thing apart to check pins on the connector inside. So for now, he just doesn't have DVD.
