I have a CF-28 running XP. It runs very very slow. I bought a 256mb stick of ram off ebay & installed it. It runs super fast, but unstable, I keep getting booted off the internet, & I would get the BSOD with memory parity errors. Without the memory installed it runs dead dog slow, but stable. Mine has a pentium 3 running at 1ghz, and it shows 248mb of ram. The motherboard is a DL3UP1151FXB. I have read through some of the past posts/threads, and it seems that these laptops are particular to a certain number of chips. I have scanned it using the crucial & micron website scan tools, they can not do a complete scan. I would like to know what the maximum amount of ram that can be used, & does it have to match what is soldered onto the motherboard. I also have 2 CF-72's with pentium 3's running at 800mhz, with 128mb of ram. When I put the 256mb into these laptops, they only see it as 128mb. The ram module I bought is PC133. Everyone I've talked to say that the faster ram is downward compatable to the slower speed ram. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Kingston # KTM-TP133/512. Always works, not too expensive. Trust me on this!

For what its worth my 1 gig 28 has been working fine for about 4 months now with a Kingston KVR133X64SC3L/512 stick .
-
Ron,
That's probably the same stick in Value Ram. The last time I bought them they were about the same price. I've watched people fight this for almost a year now and I've never heard anyone have the proper Kingston ram cause any problems. Watch for sales on Newegg, otherwise Kingston seems to be as cheap as anyone.
CAP -
Last time I recall 512 of KVR PC133 costed a boat load of money
-
Please define "boat load"
I got mine for less then $35.00 including shipping.
They come up on ebay all the time, you just have to keep checking till you find one.
Bob -
Around $71 from Kingston.

I was just gonna say about 80... but if you got it for 35 you got a STEAL DEAL!

I got my 256mb off ebay, I think it was between $20.00-$30.00, If I could get 512mb for under 50 bucks, that would do me just fine.
Just checked ebay, the ktm Is going for $49.00 , & the KVR is going for $109.00 The KVR is value ram. -
Do you feel lucky?????

Bob
Let us know if it works. Its a good price
My first thoughts are it might not as the memory that I have used and worked had 4 chips/side and this is 8chips/side
But my luck with the cf-28's memory has been horrible
Alex -
YES !!!!! it works
Less then $30.00 shipped to your front door;

374 still available from this seller
I am in no way associated with this seller. I am not making any $$ off of this. I am just a happy CF-28 owner passing along good news, if you are looking for good cheap memory. If all the 512 memory units are the same as the one I received then I think this is a good deal.

in the words of Chris Farly "HOLY SCHNIKIES" THATS CHEAP MAN!!! GO FOR IT!

What Mk# cf-28 have you tried it on?
Alex -
Both of my CF-28s are Mk2 800MHZ laptops, and it works on both of them.
256MB on board and 512MB brings them both to 768.
Both seem to work well and recognize the full amount.
Bob -
Sorry for the long delay, but I bought & tried the one from ebay. No dice, windows starts, but then goes into the bsod. I guess my only other option is to pony up & get the Kingston stick for the big bucks.

We appear to have slipped into the "we know this is legacy hardware you're trying to keep alive, so we're gonna stick it to ya" range on these great CF-28 Mk2/Mk3 machines... those KTM-TP133/512 are now right around 50 bux USED and 80-90 bux NEW. (You can tell easily enuf; when those hosers at CompuVest get into a market, you KNOW it's jumped the shark)

Yeah, I've seen the kingston on fleabay for $46 bucks. But before I buy it. I was wondering about my bios. I have been checking out some of the bios update threads. I have seen "512mb bios updates". Would it be worth a try to flash my bios ???. Maybe the 2 sticks of memory I have would actually work ??
-
Yuo should have ver. L00013 (I think)... Anyway... 13 is the latest for the 800Mhz... You'd have to check on the 600MHz and 1GHz models...

The v300L11a bios update states Adding support for 512MB additional expansion memory
So it is worth a try and can be downloaded here for your mk-3 1000 cf-28

OK, I have successfully flashed the bios. It is showing 768mb in the bios, windows starts, runs for a little bit, then the bsod. it says there are errors in the ntfs file system & registry address(s). I am wondering if altering the memory has corrupted the registry ??. I am contemplating a complete re-install of windows, re-partitioning & formatting the hard drive, etc. The other option would be to re-install / repair over my existing os. Would a repair clean up the registry, etc.??

Before you freak out, get MemTest & run it on your machine overnight.
http://www.memtest86.com/download.html
This will eliminate doubt as to whether your failure is in the RAM itself or your file structure, as it runs from floppy or CDROM directly in real-mode, completely bypassing the OS on your HD. (You can even pull the HD if you like). Let it run for at least a few hours to get the RAM nice & toasty; unless of course it starts showing failures right away - Then you know too!
Good hunting,
mnem
File that one in the ol' bit bucket... -
You can also try to run fixmbr.exe and see if it corrects the boot system error.
-
I ran memtest with the 512 stick installed & it didn't even get to 1% complete. I then put in a 256mb stick, memtest ran for an hour with no errors, but when I start windows I get the bsod. So, I could buy the Kingston 512mb stick, run memtest with it, & if no errors, I would think windows must be corrupted. I could also re-load windows with the 256 stick, since we now know it runs stable. Decisions....Decisions

I just bought the Kingston 512 stick on ebay for $31.99. This is the cheapest I have seen so far. Installed it and runs perfect. Fast, no bsod. The Kingston 512 stick is the only one to go with for the CF-28.
