So I'm sitting at my desk earlier tonight, my CF-28 up and running; dual boot working, 2nd monitor plugged in, getting ready to copy over a few GB of tech manuals, PLC programs, ect. ect. to the new HDD.

I have my Ubiquiti WIFI card in the hidden PCMCIA slot, a CF card reader in the top accessible PCMCIA slot (my pagefile swap drive), and I slip in a USB 2.0 card in the last PCMCIA slot (I need the rear USB for my external HDD) so I can plug in my trackball.

The computer locks up. I wait a minute then pull the card back out. Stays locked up. I do a hard reboot.

I had used this exact same setup with the factroy CISCO WIFI card in the hidden slot and had no issues.

I reboot and try a 2nd USB 2.0 card in the same PCMCIA slot. This time the computer actually makes a humming noise. I power down immediately.

    Any thoughts?

Heat, loose connection to mobo, ram or lack thereof. Install new thermal pads lately? Ummmm, I think heat and asking too much which equals heat.

    Anyone?

    Dunno......

Use the key sequence FN+TAB and turn off the hidden PCMCIA slot, plug in the USB2.0 card and life is good. Driver conflict?

Too much current draw at the PCMCIA slots; those AKE USB cards have an inverter in them that will tax the slot's power supply even when it's the only thing in there. Or, could be another of the famous AKE USB card failures you keep reading about... those things really are a POS. I have 1 out of 5 still working. When they fail, they CAN damage your PCMCIA slot/controller.
