Hi guys. Hope all of you that helped me before just before I turned 63 and now just a few days before I hit the 65 mark and the government takes care of me YEA RIGHT

I just restored this computer and I saw where you could let the computer recondition the battery for it. Great I said but now I can't find it any where. do any of you have any idea where to look for it?

I also could not find all the stuff I had used before when I did this computer from scratch the first time a few years back but of course had the oem xp for it. So I took a gamble and x ed my fingers on this down load and WEEEEEEEEEEEEEE it came with all the bells and whistles + some I think? But it was well worth the bucks and made the rest of the install a piece of cake. Not sure what else he has but it did the trick on this 28 :)

Thanks for the info. I will give it a shot and see what happens on this one. I think I replaced the battery when I bought this one? But I only unplug it and carry it down to the shop a few hundred ft away and connect it back up. But never know what I might want to do and when and where. I do have a wireless card to work with it and maybe when the weather gets nicer I just might want to set on the porch with a cool one and surf a bit? At least till the wife bites me I guess!!!!!!!

Yep been a while and this 28 has been doing great so have not had any reason to ask questions and for sure can't answer any ones either.

Just been trying to keep my powder coating business going and this new year so for looks good as long as it keeps up that is. Got to help pay the normal what it take to survive these days with every thing going up and then people out of work and that's not good.

Thanks for remembering me and posting :)

Hit F2 while booting and look for the battery refresh utility on the last tab

I could not see a download for it under the downloads section, but I did not look too far and I don't remember your model #

Do you remember if you refreshed the battery from a utility in windows ?

Pressing F + F9 will show how much battery power you have left. The below link is where you can get the reference manual Toughbook Computer Support - Manual Downloads or http://pc-dl.panasonic.co.jp/dl/download/file/003932/s/67d8c3e079cceb76/28mk2-2kxp_e_rm_a.zip or to download the reference manual (page 52)

Press F2 on startup ( it will take a couple seconds) in the last tab in BIOS you will see the below picture . It will take 3-6 hours if your battery is any good at all.
This will not bring back a dead or used up battery. but it can't hurt :D

I believe it's on all CF-28s. As it is in the BIOS you don't need to down load the utility, I think.
All you youngsters quit complaining, getting old beats the he11 out of the alternative.

In the Util folder is a file named brecal. If you did a factory install of XP it should be there.
    C:/Util......

Well one thing for sure with me making only the one posting a few years ago it is easy to find me :) And yep you have the number of it correct.

After I restored it I had a problem with outlook exp and between my son and I went to a lot of places that you wouldn't have to go to often if any. So just maybe that is where I saw it show up? but I knew I didn't want to get involved in it at that time just because I just might couldn't do any thing else when I did.

I had been in BIOS and also in Safe Mode. So I do remember seeing it some where? Id id go check C util and the folder is there but didn't see anything that would just pop out at me?

I will try the f2 and whatever I need to do to find it again and post back if I do I don't.

You guys are great and I really think you a bunch :)

    I'LL BE BACK soon ;)

Well Pink is a good color and real cheap and also good for anyone that might even think about taking it

Does any one know what is on it to start with or what it is made of? The chemical stripper I use will get any thing thrown at it so for and there some coatings that are real mean but it gets it but takes longer than others.

Well a magnet want stick to it so that is not good unless it is 100% SS but if it is a plastic then it has to be able to handle at least 400 degrees for most powders.

So you tell me and maybe I can do it and maybe it can't be done?

OK then! I can do both no problem but some Magnesium could present a problem with my stripper but have had non yet with it but I also don't leave it it to long and that is the Key factor.

So who has an extra one or one damaged that could be sent to me? Hell shipping back and forth would cost more that what I would charge you guys to coat one unless you wanted something that I don't carry in stock.

This would be fun to try and it is not easy to do either! But don't think I could do the edges? Well lets see if this will upload? Its a Fiber look. You use the mat that goes in the tools trays for your tool box but it don't like heat at all and about a min and a half and it has to come out and pulled off and then back to the oven for a full cure but it does not want to wrap over edges to well :(

I have a CF-28, with the infamous flashing red battery.

It is meant to be a newer battery, I bought it from someone recently. Anyways, long story short, battery is now failing, maybe this heat issue I have read, I hardly ever used it...

When I press F@ at startup to go into BIOS, I get this PHOENIX BIOS Setup utility prompt asking me for a password, and I cannot get past this screen to see the battery utility. I have tried a few of the backdoor passwords I found on this site with no luck.

Is there any other way to access the battery utility on a CF-28 without this password I do not have?

    thanks for any help..

As it has been said in the past the battery might be new but old stock. Panasonic stopped making these 3-4 years ago. If its flashing red its dead and the utility will not bring it back. I had the same problem with my 28. I never used it for 3 months and when I got it out one day it was dead and never came back.

No other way to get to the battery utility that I know and we can not talk about the BIOS passwords...sorry

This was taken from the F.A.Q.

Actually, Panasonic stopped making batteries for the CF-29 3-4 years ago. The CF-28 is more like 5-6 years ago now. There are no genuine Panasonic batteries for the CF-28 that will have full capacity; service life, including shelf life on these is 3-4 years per design spec. As you get further away from that, the less life even brand new Old Stock batteries will have.
In fact a battery that's been on the shelf that long will nearly 100% likely be deader than a doorknob; they die quicker if never used than if left on charge 100% of the time.

Bottom line is that your only hope for a full 4 hours out of a CF-28 is one of the new china batteries & hope you get lucky. The battery rebuilders out there, while it did appear that they had some means of effectively reprogramming the smart chip in our batteries, have since fallen into grievous disrepute across the board with many tales of "expensive, deader than when it was shipped out" being the norm.

This has historically been the effective lifetime of a laptop PC; without a decent battery they become pretty much useless, so the manufacturers make sure they change battery designs every 4-6 years to ensure product turnover. Panasonic has been better than most in providing OEM batteries for almost twice that for most of their product lines.
