First off, yes I did do a search and came up with several reputable retailers of the Hitachi Travelstar 7K100 100gb hard drive, but EVERYBODY seems to be sold out!
I did find a few but they appear to be gouging the price, I have seen them as high as $199.....

    Any suggestions?

I am waiting for my 1gb to get here and figured I'd get a head start on upgrading in the mean time....

    Thanks in advance

I tried the link you found Gravitar, as well as newegg, pricewatch, and a couple of others. Everyone is out! The Hitachi 100gb 7200 are end-of-life is what I am being told. Is it possible to go higher on the size?

Yes, of course you can use a larger drive but I would think you'd try to match the specs (including heat and power) .. I am about to do this with my one and only but I am re-using an 80gb drive I had from my damaged Thinkpad. I finally was able to locate another caddy and when it gets here I'm going to reload and retire my 30gb to the spare parts pile. I can get by on 80gb as I have a few unix systems I use locally for disk servers anyway so I can always rotate stuff onto those if it gets crowded. Solaris and Linux... doesn't samba rock?

    Actually, T -

The LAST thing we want to do is match OEM specs here; the entire purpose of this thread revolves around replacing the SKEEVY-SLOW OEM 10-30GB hard drives with these models of UBER-FAST 7200RPM drives... we KNOW they generate more heat, but they are a major performance enhancer for these older series TBs. They have been tested & are known to cohabitate well within the CF-28 family; we're just lamenting the scarcity of a favored model due to... there being no more of them made.

ZZZZZIP-TANNNNG! There goes another 7200 RPM drive...

I don't know if you can go higher on size **AND** get a 7200 RPM drive. I know for a fact that you can get a seagate momentus 160GB drive in PATA, but it is only 5400 RPM. That's what i've got in my 28, in fact.

I'm not sure if anyone other than Hitachi was making 7200 RPM PATA 2.5" drives, and it seems that Hitachi's biggest one is 100GB(??)

Hi...I meant match the specs of the 7200rpm drive, not the original equipment! I'm not crazy!

    Well, quite right then!

I was wondering myself about the new perpendicular head Seagate drives... that 5-year warranty IS tempting, even after the last several years of dubious quality...

I can only wish. I will be using a re-cycled 80gb drive from my old laptop for now but once the swap goes well I'll have an empty caddy for the new CF28 that I should be getting soon. (I'm starting to be nervous I sent the person paypal last night but not a word from him. I checked his account and he just signed up for paypal so who knows?) Before I can start looking into large capacity and high performance disks I want to get some things built into the new frankenbook(tm) and that means my meager budget has to be focused on that! IF that goes well I'll be begging someone to sell me a MK3 1ghz motherboard too.

I just scoped that one out - it's sold out. But they DO still have a 60GB version on clearance for only $74.00!!!

TB - is that the right series to have all the control utilities you like? Or does it really F-ing matter at that price?

    UPDATE!

I found and ordered one from here
they are a little more than before but thats supply and demand for ya....

I also found a alternative for the budget minded, they are refurbished models though. Don't know anything about the life expectancy of a refurbished hard drive maybe somebody can jump in and offer an opinion.

I don't get it... what is wrong with all the HTS721010G9AT00 on ebay? There are alot, they just happen to be OEM'd to Dell... But they're fine in any system. I checked a few days ago and there were like 6 being sold.

Wish I would have seen this offer before I placed my order.... Anyways, I am in a rush and have that can't wait for my new toy syndrome.

I would like to upgrade my toughbook with some of the below modifications, so if anybody has any of the parts they want to sell just let me know before I begin my hunt.....

    • Backlit Keyboard
    • Custom Internal GPS W/ Antenna (sister board, EM-408 GPS Engine, Geohelix Antenna, etc...)
    • Ubiquiti SR2 WI FI Card

I saw one this morning for BIN of 96.99 + 10.00 shipping.. I think there are always alot because the last 2 weeks I had a search up and I saw new ones listed almost every day (reasonable, not like those $150+ listings)

I'd be happy with a 7200rpm 80gb drive but the laptop isn't my primary storage for stuff (I keep about 30 years of junk, it's scary to look at code you wrote 10 years ago and not understand it...makes you wonder if you grow more stupid as you get older...)

Meanwhile, the seller shipped my next CF28 yesterday so I'm a happy camper (happier when it gets here) but the darned ebay seller of a caddy I bought last week must have shipped it via Pony Express because it hasn't arrived here yet.

The CF28 I just bought is coming with an empty caddy so as a dry run I will stick an old disk in it and load Windows XP (thanks to a new friend here) and then load all the drivers to perfect my technique.

I've always been mostly a unix person so I've always been somewhat weak in Windows and Intel hardware but very very much a hardware person. I have been using Windows alot more the last 2-3 years as I grew up and realized my hatred of Windows was nonsensical and I use it to access all my unix systems (all over the world) and it works reliably. I was being an idiot all those years I suppose.

The "new" CF28 is only 800mhz but it might end up becoming a 1ghz machine assuming I can get a good motherboard. Since I don't plan on becoming an "Ultimate" toughbook builder as a business I don't know if I'll ever own more than (2) units though.

Sorry for the rambling. Nyquil is strong stuff, feel like I am stoned.

    Have a wonderful weekend!

PS can someone enlighten me as to which 3COM mini-pci combo card is the ones everyone has been using, or does it really matter as long as it has (1) 10/100 and a modem? (that reminds me, do you know how ANNOYING it is to see someone link to something on ebay saying "This is the one I got" and not including model numbers? Ebay nukes the listing about 3 months later and you're wasting your time by at least not taking the time to actually paste the info into the article stored on NBR which will hopefully be there forever (or 5 years, whichever comes first)

I'm looking for the Ubiquiti SR2 card myself. I don't like the Engenius drivers very much, and I've heard more good things about the Ubiquiti so I'd like to try it out.

I got a couple of rubber backlit keyboards from Gravitar. He may have more, though he sells his stuff fast... never know.

The 3Com card is 3CN3AC1556(B). some have the B at the end, some don't. I've used both and can't figure out what the difference is. If you're looking for a good deal on ebay, try this: 180142463866. Good people to deal with and you can't beat the price.

ETA: Here is a 3COM combo card (3CN3AC1556B) I pulled from an IBM Thinkpad T20 today. I have the stuff to go ahead with phase I..

    T -

The guys on this forum who buy a lot of these drives are doing it for resale - they need new drives with new drive warranty. Warranty of any sort on eBay is at best an iffy thing; many manufacturers refuse warranty on items bought from eBay, even from a seller with a regular store.

eBay, for all it's hype, really still is a gianormous flea market, no matter what all is being sold in it. I've bought too many bad hard drives there; I simply don't bother unless its something I can't get from Newegg or one of my local recycled computer parts stores.
Furthermore, hard drives are so cheap now... it's often only a matter of a few dollars difference from maybe used/refurbished on eBay to new retail with full warranty.

I agree with you EBAY is always a risk... I've been burned more there in the last 2 years than in the last 10 combined.

If we could get them new at a reasonable price that would be much better but I can't seem to find any at the usual places. Maybe when newegg gets some more...

    Thanks
