On the topic of memory, has anyone been able to get 1 gig in it? I saw someplace that suggests the chipset would support it?

I think 1GB is only possible in the 1GHz models, and only if they come with 512MB on board.

Ok so I havent posted in a while but I had a question and an update.

I havent fixed my mobo yet :( I still need to see about getting the F4 fuse and replacing it...

anyways, I was wondering about upgrading the CPU. I know they are more or less permanently attached to the board, but can they be replaced or is it easier to just buy a whole new board?

And as for the update, we hired a new guy at work the other day. I brought my cf28 in to work so I could pull some info off the HDD and he saw it and got all excited. He served 12 years in the armed forces and just got back about 6 months ago. He was telling me how he used to use them all the time in the Middle East...dual booting win 2k and unix and the like. I mentioned that I had heard stories of these things saving soldiers lives and he got real serious for a minute. He told me how one saved his life. He said that his team was out doing normal patrol/recon work and he got separated from the rest of them when he decided to check out this little cave like formation. turns out there were two guys in there that did not really like Americans at all. He said he ended up shooting one and running out to find cover. he said he was crouching down behind some rocks looking over them waiting for the other guy and radio-ing in to the rest of his group. next thing he knows, he hears this *ching*thump* noise a little ways off sorta behind him in a blind spot. he turns and sees the guy laying on the ground and one of his buddies standing there with his toughbook out and bloody. apparently he had the toughbook out logging their coordinates and some info when he got the radio call and closed it, ran around a few rock formations and saw the terrorist-guy coming up behind him and just smacked him in the back of the head with the laptop...fractured his skull or something...but saved the other guys life. He said that was the only time he ever came close to dying so he was all about the toughbooks now. on a lighter note, he has done just about every mod and hack that you would want to [or tried to at least] so he should be of considerable help with mine :D

anyways...just thought I would share. Hopefully I will get that mobo fixed soon and get my Ubiquiti and CACE cards going. Then the real fun begins! I would have it fixed up already but I have been busy building a new server so the toughbook got put on hold...but now the server is all done and fired up so its time for the toughbook.

Looking for 512mb stick for my 28-800. I just tried some I bought from RamUpgrades on Ebay. I couldn't even get the toughbook to boot up or anything. Removed the new stick put the 256 back in and it started up just fine. If anyone knows of a reasonable source please let me know. Thx, Scott

BEWARE of the RAM EXCHANGE on ebay... They will RIP YOU OFF! They got $92 from me... Sent me bad ram, I returned it and haven't heard back from them. Paypal can't get involved becasue it was a "return" issue. They are worthless!

If you paid through PayPal using a credit card or Visa/Mastercard backed debit card, you should be able to contact them and backcharge the sale for defective merchandise, as long as you have receipts for payment and return shipment.

I hate how paypal operates. I don't let them touch funds out of my bank account (Always make sure it's taken out of my debit card, even though it's attached to the same account), though I need to have a bank account on there so I can receive my money.

This way if I get screwed over, I can still call Visa or my bank.

I would have done that too... But then they put limits as to how much you can spend. I think they cap it at either $250 or $450. Or at least they did. Plus I need to be able to transfer to my checking account.

Hey guys... I ordered two sticks of RAM for a couple of CF-28s. I got it from Newegg. (Of course.) It is this RAM here...

    http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148030

Shouldn't this work? It seems to work fine on one of the CF-28s but I keep getting the BSOD on the other one. Both sticks pass MemTest with flying colors. Both 28s have the latest BIOS. (V13)

It is not the RAM that I ordered last time but it's a match in every other way it seems.

    Any ideas?

I don't know why they don't have the 512 - they don't even list the 1000Mhz - might call or ask them I am sure that they have it - I was chasing 256 so I did not even notice.

To my knowledge... The only place that lists the RAM maximums shows that the MAX RAM in a CF-28 is 512MB in those that have 256 soldered on and 1GB on those that have 512 soldered on.

It does on my CF-28 - look in the Memory Controller subsection, under the General Information main tab. It tells you the maximum memory module size, as well as the types of ram supported. Maybe the CF-29 DMI has the same layout?

ED: Hmmm... under the Physical Memory Array section it also shows on my Mk3 that even though the Max Module size is 512MB, the Maximum capacity is 1GB... so, if'n yer brave & can "acquire" the correct additional chips, (plus probably a few associated discrete components that probably got left off with the extra bank of RAM) you probably CAN add that other 256MB to the mainboard and the BIOS SHOULD recognize it... Wasn't someone else asking about this?

Hmmmmm.... On my CF-29 it reads that 512MB of RAM is the max supported.... Yet I have an additional 1GB of RAM installed.

Most of the toughbooks have a "Max" below what they can really handle. There are a couple of exceptions. In most cases, when you go too far over the so-called max, it will still see you have it but not utilize it completely. Now how does that work?

    Mmmmhmmm...

Max RAM size in most cases is determined by the paging system defined in BIOS. However, those system definitions are supposed to be what the DMI Viewer is reading... Perhaps the DMI Viewer is just retarded?

I know that the DMI for mine states that "Max System RAM" is 1024 MB - however, the "Max RAM Module Size" is 512MB. I have to imagine then that if I replaced the missing 256MB on my MB(I have only 256MB on my model, not 512MB as some Mk3s) I could get my 1GB RAM... or if someone made a 768MB module, it might support that... or maybe, if I put in a 1GB module, it would page out 768 MB of that... I dunno fer sure.

Anybody here got a damaged (preferably physically, not electrically toast) Mk2 or Mk3 MB they'd sell for cheap so I can rob the RAM off it? I have a hot air SMD rework station; if anyone has a good chance at makin' it happen, it'd be me.

There has been mention of a preference for one manufacturer over another in the CF-28 -- is that documented or is there no real difference?

    AllComponents
    Crucial
    Kingmax
    Kingston

This is the best price I have found so far. Does it look OK?

    KD4e -

You can find out which processor you have by entering Setup on your laptop; you are correct in your list regarding which CF-28 Mk is which.

The memory configuration is as follows:

    Mk1 - Built-in 128 MB PC100, MAX 384MB
    Mk2 - Built-in 256 MB PC133, MAX 768MB
    Mk3 - Built-in 256 MB PC133, MAX 768MB
    MK3 - Built-in 512 MB PC133, MAX 1024MB (Certain models ONLY)

I've heard thirdhand of such a thing as a Mk2 with the same 512MB/1024MB configuration as those high-end MK3s; can anyone on this board confirm they have actually SEEN a Mk2 with 512 MB onboard and nothing in the memory slot?

You can find out more about your memory architecture, and the overall construction of your machine, by downloading the DMI viewer here:

    https://eww.pavc.panasonic.co.jp/pc/cgi-bin/itn/toughbook/dl01.cgi

Select DRIVER content type, then CF-28S(Mk3) Model #, Select your OS and then click SEARCH; you'll be presented with a list of all drivers for the Mk3. I believe the DMI Viewer will work on any model CF-28 and some other model Toughbooks as well, but not certain there.

Ahhh... yes. THERE is a difference in the DMI Viewers...

    Go here:

    http://modly.net/CF-28/

The M folder is for Mk1
The P folder is for Mk2
The S folder is for Mk3

As I've mentioned before; please don't be a bandwidth hog; download only what you need. When you get things working please let us know, and a quick shout out to Modly (and maybe even a little Rep) for hosting this collection of resources would be the civil thing to do.

Thanks for understanding, now go git you some!

I work in a computer store and we have a bunch of CF-28PCxxxxx and they will take a 512MB stick of RAM but we haven't been able to get 16 chip sticks to work. I have no idea what this is. I had what looked like a heat-spreader on it but we just pulled it off. What is this? This is a 512MB stick that works in our CF-28's. WTF kind of chips are these?

I have been reading the posts and have not been able to find resolution to my problem. I have a CF-28PTJGZDM w/ 256mb onboard. Is it at all possible to get a 512mb card to work on this model? Is it a matter of updating the bios? My bios is the 00L13. Thanks for your time.
