Well.....Seems I have been bitten by the fever again! Have about a half dozen or so of old CF-28's that have been lying in storage for a good 10 years or so. First off, I know this is not the ideal model to be playing with these days but being nostalgic, cheap and already have the inventory looking to take the two best, steal parts from the others and upgrade these guys just for fun.
Looking to purchase a larger hard drive, more ram, be able to use it wirelessly and maybe install gps.
Having been a member of this forum for over 10 years, I know the rules about reading, reading, searching and searching again but it looks like a lot of the old links for the 28 point back to the home page and are no longer accessible. Am I missing something? Anybody wanna jump in on here please feel free. Maybe new ideas on better and faster components would be a great help....
    Loving this again....Thanks

I am not a Linux fanboy but in this case, I suggest an i386 Linux.
I personally like the Mac OS look so I tweaked the GUI some.
I am running MX18 i386 that I tweaked the looks a good bit. See my FZ G1 thread.

Porteus OS really screams on old hardware. CRAZY fast and a tiny footprint.

You want a non-pae 386 version of whatever you select.

MX Linux still has one as does antiX Linux....but Porteus may be the best choice....plus Porteus did have plop linux in the "grub" menu. Plop will enable you to install off a USB stick. Might need to force USB 1.?

I have a wireless card in a CF-28 with the antenna stuffed in the only plastic bit...under the right palm....or is it left....it was upside down at the time. :)

Know absolutely nothing about Linux, will be keeping XP Pro on one of them (need it for backup work software program) but would definitely like to play with this idea. This is EXACTLY what I'm looking for, no spoon-feeding, I like to read, just wondering what's being done now to these tough books. Or is most of the old stuff from 10 years ago pretty much still standing?
Thanks guys on the Linux idea :)

If you are keeping XP there is a registery hack that will give you updates till some time in 2019. It makes it think it's XP embeded version that still has extended support. I still fire up my 28 from time to time, the CF-28 Mk2 is the one I started my Toughbook craze with.
