Hi all,
Just wanted to say hi and ask a few questions:
Recently purchased a fairly well used CF-28 - everything works fine but it looks bloody awful. Even my wife (who knows everything) says I should paint it - so I must be right.
I'm thinking Hammerite smooth silver on tft casing and Hammerite satin black on lower case. Using a spot filler and primer to hide any scratches.
Anyone tried this before? I searched this forum but couldn't find anything on painting. The other forums had some interesting stuff for plastic cases but nothing specific to toughbooks.
Also, i've got my eye on a Solid State Disk - specifically a Transcend 2.5" 32Gb IDE SDD.
I know it won't give the same write performance although they state it reads up to 26MB/s and writes up to 8MB/s - which for my use is fine.
Anyone fitted a SDD to their CF-28 or even a CF-18?
Great forum - I can't wait to fit a gps and internal wifi card - the faq is brilliant.
regards,

I'm interested.
Would one of these solid state drives plug and play the caddy of my CF-18 D? -
Yes... If you get the IDE SS Drive it will work... they are just s dang expensive!
YA... If the top is scratched you might try painting it... A few here have including me. If you look up "Ultimate Toughbook" on ebay you'll see on the very bottom of my ad where I have painted a few. I use auto enamel and drop it off at the custom spray shop after I totally strip it the bare magnesium. Spot putty won't hack it... It will show.
I'm not sure I'd paint the sides and bottom. If you do I would try to stay with a satin black which will match the existing finish. The bottom has been powder coated so you won't be able to strip that off.
Whatever you decide to do.... Post some pics and let us see what you do! -
I just put a SSD in my CF-30. One thing you want to look for in a SSD you're going to run your OS on is a single layer drive and not a muliti layer drive. The SSD you're looking at will be too slow to run an OS on in my opinion.
I posted another thread on what I did with my laptop, feel free to PM me or post with any questions. You can find good deals on ebay. -
You're right - unfortunately.
The Transcend 2.5" 32Gb IDE SDD has had terrible reviews regarding speed and reliability.
We're currently looking at the Samsung offerings - while more expensive it is still within our budget range - it looks like a better offering than the Transcend.
Unfortunately, our budget just doesn't run to something faster ie mtron or memoright so we're stuck trying to find a 'cheap' solution that runs our application suite.
