I have just acquired a toughbook for use in my shop its a CF-28P3JGZQM Its got to have the operating system re-installed because the XP pro that is on it has an invalid XP product number according to MS checking on update.

So I figured its time to play around with it on installing things like the touch screen and what ever to see what I could get to work? Well I down loaded a driver and it said it was not for this unit? It was (mouse_28_3_d020616) I downloaded it from gzrcw.net/drivers/Panasonic/drivers_885.html It was the CF-28ST/SR(mk3) Windows XP Pro SP1 for the touchscreen and pad.

Right now it has XP with sp2 on it and I have 2 XP w/sp1 Cd's and have the info on the bottom of the computer so just maybe I can re-load it to suit me like I normally do with a normal laptop. But I will still have to have the correct driver for all the other stuff on it as normal and would like to do it one time and done if I can. What is screwing with my head is the ST/SR(mk3)

What can you tell me to help me get the right drivers.

Thanks from a 62 year old that I thought I could but this one is confusing me a bit?

Your model number: CF-28P 3JGZQM did not come equipped with a touchscreen so no driver for this will help. You also have a MK2 as denoted by the P in the model number so you need to get the correct drivers for the other devices.

    Duke,
As one old man (64) to another, welcome to the forum. Your MK 2CF-28 is probably not a touchscreen, it wasn't when it left the factory. It is in fact a very basic unit. I strongly recommend you read the CF-28 FAQ. thread posted at the top of this forum and then come back with all of the questions you are sure to have.
    CAP
EDIT: Your computer did come with a dual COA, XP-2K so if the Windows sticker is still on the bottom you should be set.

Thanks. that helps a lot. Didn't need the TS any way as dirty as my hands get. I do have the rubber keyboard on the way to help out with where it will be located and hope I don't have trouble with it I guess? I will install it first before I redo the system I guess?

Thanks and any help on the best download sites you guys have would be great also.

The nice thing about the CF-28 is that you can interchange most parts between the models. So if you decide later that you really need the touchscreen you can always find one on Ebay fairly cheap.

    Duke,
I have a theory. There is a certain amount of room in the human brain. If you have been paying attention, and not drinking too much, by the time you get to be our age its just about full. This is why we forget stuff, the brain needs to discard old obsolete and useless information before it can store new data. Of course if the new data is useless the brain just discards it immediately! It works for me. I used to run some boats born up your way years ago.

thanks guys for you help. Any other computer I would just go with the flow and from what I understand with this one is the same. If this one had the touch screen or not that I really do not need then all I need is the drivers I need to do what it needs to act like normal I guess? I am now I think on top of that I hope!

But thought it would be good to put in the drive way and let customers run over it and then say let me see what I can do and go get it out from under their wheel and say now lets go see

Life is fun sometimes I guess?

That's one way to keep the ladies happy I guess :)

I just swapped out the org key board to the rubber one and thought this should take all of 5 min WRONG 1 hr latter its back together and works thank goodness. The first keeper for the ribbon was broke I guess from whenever so it just jumped out and I had to fig how it should have been in there. Dag I wished I had my 20/20 back at that point. But I figured it out and one side would lock in and then a little shipping tape to make sure it stayed put and all back together while holding my breath and all worked :) I hope I don't have to go back there again :) They should have made it like the one closer to the screen and that would not have happened but its the pop up type and not the push in type. I did see another place for something small to plug in and I just guess that might be for a lighted key board? I got light so don't need that for sure.

    Welcome Duke:

That’s some mighty fine powder coating you do there looks like a real nice setup. :D

You better go and get your self a big magnifying glass if you going to stick around here for very long because it’s only a matter of time before these guys talk you into modifying your ToughBook and I’ll be damed if I can see all them little wires they cram in there.

    Good luck it’s addicting

The other laptops I own have bigger little parts in this area. This one seems to have some smaller ones. I just need to reload it and divide the drives into two or three smaller ones and it will be ready to take to the shop. I don't have a office in it so I wanted a little tougher laptop than what I had so If I needed to look up something or see how the picture turned out I wouldn't have to walk 200' back to the house every time or have to wait.

I guess drinking beer and killing brain cells has no place in that theory! :)

Duke... Welcome to the forum! Here are a few links to find what you need. The first is Panasonic's site... Registration is free and I find they have the best stuff....

    http://www2.panasonic.com/webapp/wc...ePage?langId=-1&storeId=15001&catalogId=13401

But you can also go here to cross-reference or to find things other places may not have....

    http://panasonic.ca/english/customercare/sandd/softwarequery.asp

Either way... You'll have no issues finding drivers around here....

    TB,
Drinking and other misbehaviors most certainly have a place in the theory. There is a definite, albeit not yet quantified, correlation between alcohol consumption (called a full sponge in the theory), and the age at which old information begins to be discarded in favor of new. Not being able to remember what happened last night is a sure sign that the process has been dangerously accelerated.

In the 1980's I worked in Sydney for Jaycar Electronics and back then they used to sell Maggy Lamp magnifying lamps brand new! Unfortunately never was able to purchase one but they're about the best and most long-lasting magnifying lamp I've seen. I think they're still made, but not easy to find.

However for working on very small devices, something like that is excellent. I had a cheapy magnifying lamp for my model train work for a while, but need a new one. So if anyone knows of sources for good magnifying lamps, please pass the info along, esp. if it's from a source here in Australia.

My eyesight is good at the moment but a visual aid is always good as it lights up the work area as well as enhancing the view itself.

    Craig.

Neither is mine any better, Craig. I use a stereo dissecting scope or head-worn loupe at work and there's quite a few on fleabay but unlike the one I'm using, not many are fitted with Carl Zeiss lenses. Actually, there's one but priced like a prince.

Maggies are nice but not quite as mobile and magnification ratio might not be high enough to see those itsy bitsy jumper numbers..

BTW, Duke, what's a guy in North Carolina doing in a NZ list? You swim too? :D

I don’t even attempt to work on anything that I would need magnification on
I would probably be too shaky to do a reasonable job anyways
Too much coffee I think

I use a Pelican light 7060 tactical rechargeable flashlight that puts out 130 lumens
Wow, that light is bright, anyone that has one knows that its the toughbook of flashlights , and it helps to compensate for my 50-year-old eyes

All I did was put "Maggy Lamp magnifying lamps " into Google and it was right there. Didn't even have to get wet :) Now this discussion is right above it. We on the net guys  Try it and you will see. Of course all I had was the name and don't know a thing about them and the better lenses that are talked about.

Well guys I thought I had it made after the first attempt failed to restore this computer with a store bought XP updated one I have two Of them for two diff laptops I have upgraded. So my son got all his stuff together and we copied the XP one I had and then changed something in it so it was an OEM cd and then when I went and re loaded. It took the MS number that was on the bottom of the computer this time and thought I had it made!?

All was going well till I tried to activate it and something was not right I guess and it being Sunday and MS has cut 5000 jobs I didn't get the the last person I needed to talk to? Will try tomorrow I guess to see what I can do. I can load 2000 forever but I want all my computer the same. I like XP and starter from Doctor dos/95/98/98se (wife did the ME but not me) and 2000 but XP I am used to.

I told my son that the only thing I can think of that is kicking back the XP number it that this computer was set up 2000 and that I am guess would have killed the XP number? What do you think or have any of you been able to work around this?

The only other thing I need for this computer is how to get rid of the tapping part of this frigging mouse pad? I can't get the right download so I can go in and uncheck the dag thing? Model# CF-28P3JGZQM It seems that all the drivers I try that say mouse pad or for a combo of touch screen and pad? This one does not have the touch screen as I was told. So if you have a cure let me know.

    Thanks guys

    Duke,
Its not clear to me what kind of disk you are using. I use a Dell restore disk and activate on the net. I have never had a problem with a Toughbook which had a legitimate XP COA on the bottom, just enter the number from the COA.

Well what is on the bottom looks good and see no problem with it? And my son builds and reworks computers and did all the research to convert a XP upgrade to an OEM and only had a little snag and I inserted the org upgrade XP cd and it went on with the install with no problem and it took the key on the bottom with no problem? From what I have read its been done before without any problem? The only diff was it was not say a full blown CD? Not to sure how many are that come with computers?
The bottom where the label is looks brand new with no use at all? The battery and memory and HD area look more used but that part could have come off any computer as well as the bottom? Of course if you mount one to a pedestal in a car and not setting on your lap or its used at a desk then you will not see any ware on them. I have a Sony that's older and looks brand new also. So I guess I really want know till I am able to talk to another live person in customer service about it tomorrow unless one of you say you know what the problem is and I redo it? So if any one of you guys has any more ideas let me know please! I am ready to put this computer to work!
    Thanks

Not sure what you mean by tapping mouse?
Are you asking about when you tap on the touchpad ,that it acts like left click?

I wonder if he's still using the default driver ("Microsoft PS/2 port mouse" I think is what it says) rather than the fujitsu touchpad driver. There's no way to remove tap-to-click with the default driver selected.

and I agree, tap-to-click is about the worst "feature" ever. It's a shame that when you turn it off, you also turn off the ability to click from tapping the touchscreen. Makes the touchscreen little more than a curiosity, but the alternative is worse.

Now By GOLLY you hit the nail on the HEAD. Most of the time if I get the correct driver for the mouse on the computer I am using I can get rid of that "DDDDD" tapping mouse and I can't get any update to do so because this dag computer want let me! And yes it the "D" MS mouse and can't do crap. Please give me the link/driver or whatever to the Fujitsu one.

Any many thinks for understanding what the heck I needed and was bugging the *** out of me

Remember that this CF-28 did not come with the touch screen. So I have been told and that's why I can't get any driver to download?

    Try this:
    http://www.panasonic.ca/PDP/Drivers/d-2002-158_touchpad.exe

You have to force-feed this driver to the computer, windows thinks its smarter than you and insists on using the generic driver. but once you get it in there, it works well.

no problem if you don't have a touchscreen, i'm pretty sure the same driver will work, but the touchscreen functionality will be disabled

The driver is the same for touchscreen and not in my experience. It knows what you need.

You need to download the driver and then go into Device Manager (Right click on My Computer and click on Properties.) Tell it to update the mouse driver and point it to the unzipped driver you downloaded... It should update. Then you will have Panasonic's version instead of Windope's...

As soon as my son get back on line today maybe he can help me with the force-feed because I know what you are talking about but don't know how and I am sure he does with all the programs he has designed and what he has told me he has had to do to make things work the way he wanted. He is doing I think a heck of a job on my web site and its getting ready for a major change in a few days and it will make it easier for me to do what I need in it.

One more question I have and that's the resolution on the monitor. When I bought it I saw something like maybe 1200x868 are something like that? It is a 13" screen. Now its the norm 1024x768. TomCat said if I use the restore disk that the monitor might be to bright because it is for sunlight but in my paint bay with all the lights on like normal I need more bright. But what resolution is the factory setting for out door use? Can I take the driver off the restore CD and install it? Is there a way maybe? Or do one of you know what driver I need so I can download it? When I look for drivers it might say this or that but not tell me what I really want to know is why I am asking. Or do you call it the video or graphics driver?

    Thanks Guys for your help.

If you take the time and use the restore disks the driver is installed properly
You can not take the info off of the restore disks, as its hidden in the files on those disks
    1024x768 is correct
Do you have the brightness Fn + F2 turned to max
You can adjust contrast a bit but its probably better to make a cover for the screen , we do that for marine use where sunlight is overpowering the backlight

Well that was fun but I did it and now if I can only remember how to do it again next time. NO MORE FRIGING TAPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPING :) I ended up where you insert disk and pasted in the location of the driver and it did the trick and then went to mouse properties and had to answer some yes and No's and get rid of the MS one and restart and worked like a charm :) :)

    Thanks

I have a cover that is made so people can't see real quick what you are doing unless they are straight on eye level with the screen? I will try that as soon as I fig out where the heck I put it 6 years ago  Maybe it will work? But I will check the brightness also. But I am still wondering what was on it when the guy sent it to me and it was higher? The zip file he had on the desk top for video was the Intel 830M but it says in the note from him is just in case the operating system need to be reloaded for me to save it? I updated the graphics to the Intel 82830M . I have never had to worry about most of this stuff with what came with my Sony's because I could go into the driver and app cd's and just get what I wanted. Sure did make it nice and easy. :)

As we and friends buy computer we all get different things that can help or no help. Restore disk are fine but you can't get any thing off them I guess if you want a system like I like and have 2 or more drives and that makes it easy to re do your C drive and save every thing and then move stuff back to it if you want? I lost C drive on my computer and saved every thing I had in D/E/F and move all of that off the HD before the drive gave up. What was on C that had not backed up was gone. You could see it but couldn't open it.

My Sony's came with the normal restore disk but also came with the app and the driver disk. I say great. I doubt they do any more. My son's HP came with the full XP home. Made redoing his a snap and it can be used for any computer that had home on it you just use the number with the computer you are doing just like some of you guys do. If it had came with pro I could have used it on this one.

Now days you are lucky if you get any thing. You just have to restore from where its hiding until you loose the HD and then you come under screwed to a point.

Have a great rest of the day guys and this "D" rubber key pad is a pain to type on but I bought it to put on this tough one so its my fault

I think I figured out the problem. When I was doing my testing on the cat 5 cable down to the shop I was using the battery and not the 110v adaptor and the screen would dim and I guess that is to conserve power. I did find my privacy screen and at least I found it where I thought I had it. In my goody box for computers.

I have a 150 foot cat 6 cable going one place under ground in a pipe and then I have the new run of cat 5 going aerial to my shop and during the testing I could not connect to the Internet or network? Well two days latter all is working??? Hell if I know but its running speeds that most people dream about and that's half of what the home speeds are and I am on Suddenlink Cable. My site will open full in 5 sec or under from the time you click the link on my laptop and its running through all that cat cable and through a switch. I guess I have to live with it :D

You can use the Fn+F1 to decrease your screen brightness and Fn+F2 to increase. Regardless if you have it plugged in or not. If it dims when unplugged and you need it brighter... Clcik on FN and F2 and it will increase screen brightness.
