Hello Toughbookers, I'm having trouble installing XP on my CF28 and would greatly appreciate info from successful users. No problem with installs on my other Toughbook CF45. Thanks,

I ordered a TARGUS DVD04 SLIM LINE External PCMCIA DVD/CD-ROM Drive and hope that I can use it to boot.

Can you describe the problem that you are having? Mine went right on using the COA on the bottom of th laptop! I was surprised...
So where is the install hanging? (Or have you tried yet?) You may not be able to use an external USB CD drive to install XP. I'm not sure if the Toughbook will allow the USB port to be seen durin install. You don't have a CD drive to go into the side?
Please post back what you need to know... -
Hello and thanks for your interest. I have a cF28 p3, 1ghz, w/ 512meg, a CD/DVD drive in a Panasonic CD housing, and a Targus DVD/CD rom PCICIA. I don't have any USB stuff. I'd like to install XP but damned if I can. The laptop powers fine and features a V3.V300L12C Bios which inturn features botting from CD, HD, LAN, or Flopp. I don't get any power to the Targus (? I just got it and figure it should just powerup when the cards pluged in) and I can't see XP when it's in the internal CD/DVD either. Maybe the XP cd is somehow f'd up. Maybe someone here has another thought? Thanks.

I have a dumb question... did you go into the BIOS and make your CD drive the bootable drive? If you did then try another CD...I had that problem a few installs ago. A little scratch in the right/wrong place and you're toast!
