Ahoy, just purchased my first laptop, decided to make it a Toughbook CF-28.

Came in the mail with a blank hard drive and XP PRO, along with a disc that says "Barrett drivers and gps sw charts"

Reformatted the drive, partitioned through the windows setup disc. Setup successfully copied files to the windows installation folder (although it paused a few times due to a few file copy errors that "RETRY" fixed right away.

Once going into the actual setup process I receive a few pop-ups telling me windows was unable to locate drivers for cd-rom, battery and touchscreen, please contact supplier. Over and over.

Sometimes if I pressed "ok" enough times it would let me input the cd-key and whatnot but then hits a blue emergency shutdown screen... To prevent damage to my computer. The last time it was over sysaudio.sys

I also noticed a hardware installation popup that says "Intel 82801CA/CAM USB Universal Host Controller - 2482 has not passed windows logo testing to verify compatibility with XP, which may destabilize operation of your system, continue anyway?"

The xp disc is not scratched, and I have another disc or two at a friends house if I must, but I doubt that is the problem. Is there anything I am doing wrong?

Thanks for reading those walls of text.

    Enemy,
"XP disk" I assume means one from M$ with holographic logo etc. If that is the case, it should go right in, the CF-28 does not need any drivers to function with XP. Please read the CF-28 F.A.Q stickied at the top of the first page of this forum and after you have done that and downloaded all of the drivers for your model install them. By model I mean MK 1,2, or 3 determined by the label on the bottom of your machine or in the bios if your label is gone, ie CF-28Mxxxxxx if you have a MK1. Just be sure you load the driver with the .inf first. If you have any driver install problems come back and we'll help you out. Welcome to the forum!

don't worry at all about "windows logo testing" error messages, just ignore. i'm sure the only testing M$ does to PC hardware vendors is of a financial nature!

Gee... I've never welcomed The Enemy before to the forum... I guess there is always a first time....

As the others have said... You should be able to load XP straight away... Unless you have a bad install disk, bad COA or a dirty CD/DVD Rom. The drivers are loaded after... Touchscreen, Hotkey driver and a few others that are good to have like the DMI and the handwriting utility... They install in different ways so as they said... Read the CF-28FAQ.

Let us know what else you need.

The problem is that I cannot install windows! Ive tried using 3 different discs, 100 times over. I get windows fatal blue screens during the initial setup process.

i partition, format, and let the disc do its thing, but its always failing. the farthest i got once was 9 minutes remaining to finalize windows install and it froze at 9 minutes

    Hi Enemy,

[Assuming it's not something silly like fingerprints on the CD or dust on the drive lens, and it is an original MS CD - for some reason 'backup' Windows copies only seem to work if they are burnt at very low speed. ]

The problems you describe sound as if you could have dodgy memory in the machine.

Try running memtest86+ on it (free from www.memtest.org). Get the ISO image, it will burn to make a self-booting CD.
This will show if there are any memory problems.

If that shows any faults, the most likely cause is dodgy connections - see if it has a plug-in ram module & if so remove it and clean the gold edge contacts on the memory module itself (by rubbing with a bit of folded copier paper - never anything abrasive or that leaves an oily residue).

Another possibility is if it's one the machines that's been sold without port covers and it's got dust or condensation in it at some time. In that case, you need to strip it down and carefully clean everything with a small soft paint brush, then re-assemble and try again.

A few unknown devices are common after a good windows install as you also need the Panasonic-specific drivers, but you should not get any corrupt / missing file errors.

If you continue to have problems, let us know.

    Robert.

ps. Another thing to check - remove and re-seat the hard drive conector as these can come loose if the latches are not properly set.

AGREE 100% I have pulled my hair out many times over these issues and it almost ALWAYS ended up being bad RAM or CMOS battery. If you are CONFIDENT on the media, try taking out extended RAM and run on on-board only and see if it improves.

+3... If it has a stick of RAM... Take it out and try with just the base RAM.

I had the dreaded "( minutes to go" hang-up too several times early on. I can't remember if there was a one-size-fits-all fix for it....

Please let us know about the RAM...
