I just finished assembling my new project, a CF-28/800Mhz/12"/256 (pics will be uploaded shortly, new paint and several neat tricks!) and I have a problem with the colors displayed by the monitor. The resolution is at 800x600 (max for the 12"), and the sharpness is great, but the color is washed out (almost like it is in safe mode, but it is not). I have done all the windows updates (unit has fresh install of XP Pro), and I have downloaded and installed the latest graphics drivers (82830MG chipset), but nothing seems to effect the color (or lack thereof). Thoughts? Help anybody!

The 12" screen on the CF-28 is transflective technology and it can be viewed in direct sunlight even without a backlight. Unfortunately this feature causes the colors to be washed out or pastel looking. You really can't appreciate the transflective screen until you mount it in your boat or car and view it under bright light conditions. The 13'3" transmissive screen has great colors but outside in bright sunlight it is completely wshed out or invisible.

You probably have the Transflective Touch screen that is viewable in direct sunlight
Is there a small hole in the top screen bezel?
Try covering it with your finger and see if the screen contrast changes.
If it does change, then your screen is in fact transflective...

I had a brand new mk-2 with the 12 inch screen
Yes the colours are not great at all, I could not imagine watching a dvd as the screen was so washed out
It was great on the boat and outside its sunlight the sensor that Bob mentioned will turn the backlight down or off ,depending on the amount of direct sunlight there is
The lower resolution screen is great for applications that you might want to use the touchscreen for, as the icons are larger and you can use your finger instead of the stylus without too many problems
The screen technology on this is comparable to a cell phone or pda screen
