Are these ports really worth taking up a mini-pci slot?

Maybe more importantly, are they worth taking up all that valuable blank-off space?

Dear god, i can't imagine being without my ethernet port. a computer isn't worth having without one of those! I suppose all you non-factory-rat types have moved onto wifi, but believe it or not wired ethernet for control is a fairly new concept in factories. We're happy when we find an RJ45 on a machine (AND it actually turns out to be ethernet, not a different network.. but that's a different story!) And to tell you the truth, I use wired ethernet at home too. I've got a cable pulled to every room already, and i can plug in just about anywhere i would happen to sit. I've got 4 or 5 wifi routers in the basement but i haven't felt the need to hook any of them up yet :)

Now the modem port, that's a different story. We don't even have wired phone service at home anymore. (its just too expensive after all the taxes!) and its hard to find a place that doesn't have wifi or wired ethernet anymore. the phone modem falls into the "nice to have just in case, but could live without" category.

My main computer at my desk is hard wired, but my laptops I always run off my wifi router. Even when I go up north in the summer it's always a wifi connection. That's why I asked the question under the Commel gps post.

The modem is not important to me at all. I haven't used 56k dialup at home since 2000, and the last time I used it elsewhere was 2002 when I was on vacation in New Zealand.

The biggest thing is most people I know use a cell phone only, and either ditched their home phone or never had one to begin with, and they realise that paying for dialup and phone service costs more than cable internet or non-phone service DSL.

We still use the modem for faxing documents and receiving faxes there are still a few business and individuals that insist on certain information be faxed instead of E-mailed. So it is good to have that modem available for that purpose. I do not recall the last time I used DialUp internet.
