That simple any time i stick a 256mb ram stick in it, it acts like there is no ram stick in the slot and shows the embedded 256mb as if no ram was installed instead of 512. I looked up bios updates on google and got very little only saw bios update for a different version of CF-28. My version is CF-28PTJAZQM.

It sees 128mb sticks fora total of 384. However I have just found out the on board 256mb ram is throwing up thousands of errors on Memtest x86.

The CF-28 is very picky when it comes to memory and if your onboard memory is bad well that's not good at all. No way to replace it...sorry. :(

There is a thread on here where someone took out a bad chip of ram that was on the motherboard off of a CF-28. The amount of ram that was in the bios didn't change even though the chip was physically removed. He still had problems with it. So like toughasnails says not much you can do on that one. What model of CF-28 do you have? The good news is that the CF-28 by it's self are going pretty cheap these days. You already should have a caddy and battery. Drop that in and you should have your old pc back.

What version of bios on what Mk do you have?

Here is some homework for you if you want to try that bios updates still.

When you can't find something on the USA sites try the Canada and Japan site, they have some stuff hidden away on them. On the above link look for BIOS and CF-28 and there will be several links.

If you buy another CF-28 motherboard, try to find a mk3 version with 512MB on board. Some of the mark 3 (1ghz) machines have this.

It sounds to me like you have a MK1 and either you or it are misreading the RAM you have; they have 128MB onboard and will accept up to 256MB RAM for a total of 384MB MAX.

It's also possible someone has reflashed the BIOS with an incorrect version I suppose; that could explain the memory errors on the mainboard and why it keeps returning a max value of 384MB. One would have had to work really hard at it because the FLASH utility is supposed to verify against the chipset itself whether a BIOS upgrade is compatible.

The other possibility is that you have high-density ram that you are testing; the CF-28 will only accept low-density RAM. For the Mk1, that means max 256MB PC100 SODIMM with both sides populated. For the Mk2 & Mk3, that means max 512MB PC133 SODIMM with both sides populated. That, however, would not explain the errors you are getting with only the onboard RAM.

    I remember... no wait, I don't.

it is a "" as stated above turns out the ram onboard the motherboard is bad. so this can go few ways, in the trash, sell as is, get luck get a new mobo for 30 bucks (don't to spend much/any money), or solder on new ram which is almost a new discussion in it's self.

Whats cool is, is that ith as back lit keyboard and touch screen. It doesn't have gps though i don't think the gps chips can even be found these days aside form the touhbooktalk forums and even then how is used, i figure gps requires oem/custom software.

EDIT: this is the link form above and bios link is dead, http://forum.notebookreview.com/panasonic/554424-cf-28-bios-update-use-768m-ram.html

EDIT:EDIT: if it's not seing ram and the on board ram is bad i wonder if it's the north bridge and or memory controller, I wonder if maybe it just needs a reflow.
