I bought an Atheros AR5008 on fleabay and when I went to install it next to the combo card, it is about an eigth of an inch too long. Is this card a no-go or am I missing something?

Probably won't work due to length, an AR5006 will work, I got mine brand new from Pasadena Networks for $40.00 plus shipping.

Another booger... don't mini-PCI specs and dimensions fall under some industry standards??? I would have thought that so long as it's not PCI-E, it should fit!!

I was talking about the slot closest to the battery if that clears and I was assuming that is where he was putting his card. However, there are some cards that are later industry standards that may not fit due to being longer just not sure if the AR5008 falls in that catagory since I don't have one to try, but I remember a member was having the same problem but I don't remember what card he was using.

Googled for more info on mini PCI dimensions (form factor and type)...
    http://www.interfacebus.com/Design_Connector_Mini_PCI_Bus.html

PWB Size Board Type Board Form Factor
    100-Pin Stacking IA 7.5 x 70 x 45mm
    100-Pin Stacking IB 5.5 x 70 x 45mm
    100-Pin Stacking IIA 7.5 x 70 x 45mm
    100-Pin Stacking IIB 17.44 x 78 x 45mm
    124-Pin Card Edge IIIA 5.5 x 78 x 45mm
    124-Pin Card Edge IIIB 5 x 64.7 x 55.8mm
    124-Pin Card Edge IIIA 2.4 x 59.6 x 50.95mm
    124-Pin Card Edge IIIB 2.4 x 59.6 x 44.6mm

I know for sure the Atheros AR5005GS & AR5006X will fit a CF-28S but how does one visually differentiate between IIIA & IIIB by looking at an image?

The only way to know for certain would be to visit the website of the manufacturer of the card in question and look at the specifications of the card you are interested in.

I have tried both slots, starting to get a little miffed at my TB, this is the fourth wireless card I have bought, and now one of the ribbons on my chicklet keyboard broke today and I am back to my old rubber. That coupled with the loose charging socket. grumble grumble grumble apple grumble grumble

Just a little? I would have thrown it out the window... but I'll betcha that it'd still be ticking when I go retrieve it again :D

Puns aside, please list the make/model of the 4 cards you've tried that are too large. You'd be doing those behind you a kind favor.

Toughnut, yeah it probably would still be ticking................

The first card was a Cisco Aironet, the second was a Linksys PCMCIA which still hangs out the side hatch like a dog out of a car window, then I bought a mini pci express card by mistake, and now the 5008.
AAhh for the lessons we learn.......

PCMCIAs don't count!! :D and I was mistaken. Thought the 4 were all mini-PCI cards.

Hardware is one thing but sometimes, the client utilities will also clash. When my RP-SMA modded CF-28S was working (now won't POST for reasons unknown), I had a AR5005GS card in it but to reach further APs, I used an Engenius/Senao SUB-362 USB adapter with twin 11dBi antenna. Unfortunately, both were Atheros based chipsets, each with a different utility and between the two, came the BSODs.

Good luck with your onward search. We do learn something new everyday and update us when it's done deal.
