I ordered what I thought were the CPU heat sink pads for (2) new to me CF-29 MK5's. Well, they arrived from Heartland this morning and they (DFMY0340ZA) are definitely not the correct part.
What I am looking for are the 2 (pads) that normally stick to the heat sink when you remove the cover. In the past I just smushed the edges in to build up some thickness and put the cover back on. Well over the weekend I opened these to units up to put EMP-8602's in decided to remove the torn pads and replace with Arctic silver. Decided to monitor temps running a Spybot scan and hit 80+. Thinking that perhaps the application was too thin (pads are thick) I removed the bottom cover and despite what appered to be good bonding/coverage to the CPU and heatsink, cleaned and applied a thicker coat pf MX-2. Temps were about the same.
Want to go back to heartland and get the (2) correct pads, does anyone have the correct part number. The schematic is very confusing and with $30 s/h fee I dont want to do this by guessing

I ordered that partnumber from Heartland in january (this year) because my 'original pads' are crumbled away and I wasn't happy with the 'other solutions' (arctic silver, ...).

Were the parts you received pads?
The mk4 and 5s use a different heat sink, I searched the official panasonic parts site and the wrong part you recieved shows up for earlier models ,but not the newer

DFMY0340ZA carries the Part Name " Sheet Plastic"
it's a 1 1/4 x 1/8" thin rubber pad with self adhesive strip on both sides
I have had earlier CF-29's (Mk3's) and the thermal pads looked the same. These would not have been approriate for that model either
I have the #DFHR3445ZA showing out for delivery today. Based on H-Bert's recent personal experience I expect they will be correct, but will update the thread. On the generic schematic (the one floating around on the web and looks to be an early series) that part caries the legend K51 'Heat Dissipation Rubber" and shows placement on the CPU. As mentioned the photos for that section of the schematic were confusing but given that part number its very clear. -
1 1/4 x 1/8" is too wide and as you say the wrong part, but descriptions from panasonic are confusing to me as the other is shown as a plastic sheet as well

I bought some other types that I plan on using. They are thinner but it looks like I'd have to cut them to size and stack them. They look to be the type that the CF-28 used. The are still "squishy" enough to provide the proper heat dissipation. They are MUCH cheaper than paying $8 every time you crack open a CF-29. Of course most can be reused... But some crumble and must be replaced.

Correct part arrived from Heartland today
Just to recap
Wrong part (pictured below) DFMY0340ZA carries the Part Name " Sheet Plastic"it's a 1 1/4 x 1/8" thin rubber pad with self adhesive strip on both sides
Correct part (pictured below in a group of 6) DFHR3445ZA "Heat Dissipation Rubber" $4.77 ea (need 2 per system). This part comes in 1/2 x 1/2" squares protected with plastic on each size, best described as thin sheets of "putty" that although not brittle easily tear even when new. As mentioned above I usually just smush the sides in when I remove a bottom cover but this time I tried to use Paste.
I ran some tests using Arctic Silver, MX-2 (which I personally found much better in Desktop CPU applications), and the Panasonic pads. I simply ran a Spybot scan and measured temps with NHC and Mobilemeter. Each session was at least 8 hours apart and the room temperature was consistent
Maximum temp with Arctic Silver was 87 degrees centigrade, MX-2 came in at 82 degrees and the Panasonic pads, 72 degrees !!!
Your mileage may vary but personally going forward I will just use the "smush" method going forward (to build up the center a bit" or replace the pads if they are really bad.

Too much gap to use Arctic silver, an option might be copper shims/Arctic silver as the gap is wide

Yeah... My thoughts exactly.... If you use nothing BUT Arctic Silver.... You're gonna be WAY hot.... You need to use it in conjunction with the pads... unless you have brand new ones of course... But even still I usually add just a dab...

there definitely has to be an alternative than paying $25 for shipping. i do need pads for an mk3 and mk4 that i THOUGHT i was upgrading by using as5 but apparently made things worse. the tb is definitely alot different than other laptops i have worked on

This may be a dumb question, but has anyone measured how thick the OEM pad is? A guy on ebay has a 8" by 16" at .020 thick sheet of thermal pad for BIN of $25 + $15 shipping. Even at $40 someone could cut a whole lot of CPU size pads and sell for a bunch less than Heartland with the $25.00 shipping.
Just a thought.

There are many different ones for sale with various thickness's. I just picked that one as an example. A while back I bought some about an 1/16 thick and 3" square. They are for some relay, but they work great when I cut them down. I don't remember what exactly a paid for a pair of them, but it wasn't much. I just measured the thickness of the existing one on the laptop I was working on and searched ebay and the net. It wasn't a Toughbook. One's cut specifically for a cpu seemed a bit pricey when I own scissors.

If you want to get a piece and test it against a new original that's one thing... but then, you'd have to have the new original, at the cost outlined above.
Seems to me you want to wait until someone is putting together a gang order from Heartland...

I don't need any. I'm just talking. I never figured anything about the composition. I guess I figured they where all about the same. My bad. I had done research on the ones I bought to confirm the correct thickness. I was using them on a 450mhz HP Omnibook. It's not like it was a real laptop. HP's don't count do they?

DFHR3445ZA is the pad for the mk4/mk5 or is it for mk3 and below
i know it has been said before it is the correct part #. but it has been confirmed only for the mk4 and mk5 according to the op and h bert.
as i need 2 pads for the mk4
and 4 for the mk3 -
The pads are all the same between MK#s..... All these thermal pads are the same between CF-29s...

This stuff is SilPad, isn't it? I used to buy this stuff by the square foot. Someone PLEASE mic a fresh one, because this stuff sells for 59 cents for a inch and a quarter square, less in quantity. I just need to know the thickness, and it would cost 6$ for maybe 10, plus 7$ flat rate shipping.

they are only 2W/m-k and the fujipoly pads from frozencpu.com are 6W/m-k and nobody knows what the material that panny uses is and its thermal conductivity. Have heard others say there are some that are up to 11W/m-k but are not available commercially. check out the fujipoly as that is what I've been using a lot of in my replacement thermal pads.......Driller

Getting ready to dive into my 29 for the first time and thought I'd better have a few of these thermal pads on hand just in case I found some were old/brittle.
Since Heartland seems to charge an arm/leg to handle such a small order, are there others who want me to order some of these heat sink pads for them also? I'll be doing it before the end of the week, so let me know fairly quickly. I'll pay up-front and you can reimburse me via PayPal. From the description here in this thread, looks like it ought to be about $10 per TB and, with enough interest, hopefully only about $5 shipping (ok if I send it on to you in a #10 envelope via USPS?) -
