I have a CF-29HTM50BM with the original 40GB HD. It has been a great laptop, but the hard drive just crashed on it. I have read thru all the threads about HD's and most I found where older posts. I know technology changes fast and maybe there is new information on this topic. I was wondering if I should upgrade to the SATA HD, which is a lot cheaper that the IDE drive I found on Newegg. I was comparing WD hard drives. Unless there is a better one ? Which would give a bigger performance boost?

To use the SATA, I found a thread here that suggests the cooldrive adapter.

2.5" SATA Hard Drive to IDE 44 Pin Adapter For Laptop Drives

I am looking at a performance boost, but also looking at cost. As for size, I don't really need a large drive as the CF-29 is only used at work and any docs / pictures I store at Dropbox.

From my experience, forget the sata and all the ide to sata adapters. They are not reliable.

I got a WD 320 gb ide/pata drive. I would avoid any Samsung drive. They also have a high failure rate.

As above....in a Cf-29 a number of forum members have tried the Sata route with limited success.

The cooldrives adapter is on sale at $19.99....& has been for around two years.

The stock 40GB Pata drive is 4200rpm with 2MB cache, a Western Digital 160/250/320GB Pata drive is 5400rpm & 8MB cache, so it would give a good performance increase over the stock drive & will be an easy swop. :)

If you are looking for an easy life, shop around for the best price on a Western Digital Pata drive....if you are looking for a challenge, go with a Sata drive with a different adapter. :D

I was one of the one's that had the cooldrives adapter installed in my 29 MK5 and it did work great sitting on my desk but one day I took it out with me in my truck. When I got to my camp I opened it up to a blank screen...this happened to me a few times so I pulled the adapter out and put it back to the way it was and never had a problem again. I installed a samsung 160GB IDE over 2 years ago and its still going great...my grand daughter has it now and loves it.

I remember seeing your posts. I have read what threads I could find with the Search and know the performance is hampered by the adaptor. Since the IDE drive is a simple replacement and more reliable, I am looking for one of those now, a WD drive. Thanks for all the comments and help you all have given me, :)

I think I will go for an easy life right now, lol. Maybe if I pick up another Toughbook later, I may experiment with the SATA just for fun, :D

Just installed WD IDE HD last night and reloaded XP. Today I spent downloading updates and drivers.Doing the HD replacement,I can see how tight it would be to add a SATA drive and adapter. Thanks to all of you for steering me in the right direction :)

Just stay to IDE drive. Don't think about the adpter. Its a waste of time and money. Yes! it may work for the meantime but soon after you place the unit on a moving vehicle or a sadden slight impact. It will give a BSOD.

After thinking about all the comments and the fact I use it to reflash vehicle ecu's, I knew I didn't want to take a chance with an unknown. That is why I went with a new drive, rather than find a used or refurbished. Just what I would need is to have the laptop crash in the middle of reflashing an engine ecu and taking it out,lol..
