    HARD DRIVES

The CF-29 uses the same EIDE / PATA / ATA-6 interface 2.5" hard drive as the CF-28; we've been upgrading to the 7200 RPM Hitachi Travelstar drives for a performance boost. See discussion here:

    7200 Rpm Hd?

Since this FAQ was created, the TravelStar IDE drives listed above have been discontinued. We are now recommending the Samsung SpinPoint Series 5400 RPM single-platter HM160HC drive, although the Western Digital Scorpio Series 5400 RPM drives also have a following due to their near-silent operation. Both have much larger cache and improved access times which produce performance nearly as impressive as the above-mentioned TravelStar drives, and their greater efficiency yields noticeable battery life improvement and reduced heat generation.
I'm sure others will chime in with suggestions as things might have changed since the FAQ's were posted...
Welcome to the Forum, and post your model number to allow people to better make suggestions

WOW this info is awesome thank you so much. My Model Number is a CF-29GC83.
Im not a Hardware guru thats why i ound this forum and any more info would be great. I fouund this used PC off ebay I know i shouldnt have got it without doing more research but i needed something really tough for my application. I calibrate (Engine Tuner) for Diablosport and needed a Toughbook to handle the abuse. Well with the files i didnt relize it would fill a 40gig HDD so fast. So if anyone has part numbers of the Hard Drives UNCNDL1 listed and if those are the best option for what im looking for.

I should have bought a cf-30 with XP i guess.

Thanks for the Acceptance to the board :)

well your found the best place to sit and read awhile...take the time to read all the threads that do back quite awhile...the first several "stickies" that are at the beginning of the toughbook forum Panasonic...you will be simply amazed...also your model number sounds looks short a few numbers/letters...unless it was a special build...keep on toughin.....

These will both work; depends on your budget:

Newegg.com - Western Digital Scorpio Blue WD1600BEVE 160GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache 2.5" PATA Internal Notebook Hard Drive -Bare Drive

Newegg.com - Western Digital Scorpio Blue WD3200BEVE 320GB 5400 RPM 2.5" PATA Internal Notebook Hard Drive -Bare Drive

If you go to NewEgg you'll also see the Samsung 160GB drive we were recommending; however, Samsung has recently revised these drives and we are now getting reports of BIOS incompatibility, particularly in the CF-29s.

Therefore, the WD drives will be our best recommendation; the balance of price and NewEgg's world-class customer service beats pretty much any deal you'll get on eBay all hollow.

That's not the actual Model Number: however, it tells me that the unit you have is a retired SBC field service unit:

    CF-29 Mk3 - SBC
    Model Number: CF-29HTM50BM
    Status: DISCONTINUED
    MSP: $3,631.00
    ***SBC ONLY***
Intel® Pentium M 738 1.4GHz LV (Centrino), 13.3" XGA Transmissive Touchscreen, 512MB RAM, 40GB HDD, Intel® PRO/Wireless 2915ABG 802.11a+b+g WLAN, Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional w/Service Pack 2, Tempo VIP Sidekick Tester/ADSL Loop Validator I/F in Media Bay pocket, Sony-Ericsson GC83 EDGE WWAN, Single Hi-Gain Antenna Pass Through, SBC Logo, Asset Tag-capable, Replaceable RJ11 Phone Jack

Check the unit's first BIOS screen [press the F2 button while the blue Panasonic startup screen is visible] to see the Model and Serial numbers of your unit.

Well; you picked a good one for that purpose.
While a CF-30 is nice, the CF-29 Mk3 you have will work well for you when the HDD is upgraded to one of those mentioned previously.
Welcome to the crazy world of Toughbook owners/collectors/"obsessionists". ;) :)

I sold my CF-29 with a WD 250GB in it just last year. The performance on it was great. I think it was actually faster than the factory 40GB. If I hadn't wanted the performance of a CF-30 with a SATA SSD, I would still have that machine.

The only trouble you will have is swapping the drive from the caddy if you have never done that before. Read up on this thread and you should be fine.
