I'm experiencing hard lockups with my CF-29. It seems to be happening every few days and is starting to get frustrating. Its a CF-29H4L with 1.25 GM Ram running the latest version of xubuntu. It originally came with a 512mb chip in the expansion slot which I replaced with a 1GB chip. But the I had freezes before the RAM upgrade so I don't think thats the cause.

I thought the the lookups may be due to overheating so I replaced the thermal pads. The good news my CPU temp is much lower now, but it didn't solve the problem. If anybody has experienced the same thing or has any ideas I would be most grateful. Thanks.

Have you tried with an earlier version of Xubuntu. The Intel855GM chipset gets a little overwhelmed by 11.04 Ubuntu(in my case) You could check around for tweaks for Intel. Ubuntu 10.10 had no issues but again when I tried 11.04 things got twitchy.
At present I run 10.04 or at most 10.10 on Mark3 and below.
We are talking graphics issues here.

I've not had any performance issues. Xubuntu is running great excluding the lockups. The OS itself takes up less than 200mb of RAM if nothing else is running. The lockups aren't necessarily happening during intensive resource usage. The last lockup occurred when only Thunderbird was running.

Hmm, you may be right. Apparently there is an issue with the intel 855 graphics chip locking up under ubuntu. I'll explore some of the fixes and if they don't work I may have to downgrade (I really hope to avoid it). Thanks for your help.

Some of those bits about Intel were incorporated into and worked in late 10.04 kernels up to 10.10. I just found that I was getting lock ups in CF-29 MK1,2,3 after switching to 11.04.
There is a bit in there about gpu also that I didn't follow through on.
IOW the intel changes were made but something was lost or they got too fancy for 845GM and earlier.

I don't like the case of the disappearing pointer and the new scroll bit either.

Mark 4,5 have no lock-up problems, neither do CF-30C, CF-51R nor CF 52.

    Good luck

    Jeff...running 10.10 by choice.
Edit: Hmmmpph! I just read this through again. Ring any bells?
